A school for the arts in the Crossroads

Post by KCMax »

Seems blindingly obvious, yet I have never heard anyone else propose this.

A School of the Arts for the Crossroads, Kansas City
One thing missing from my neighborhood is a neighborhood school that educates children.

I think having a school here amid the arts, and most important all the wonderful artists, could enrich the people and the place a great deal. Others have a similar view, I sense. UMKC is discussing moving their Conservatory of Music here in the future. Big ideas start with small steps. Here’s what I’m thinking:

- A private institution with the independence to work towards excellence, free from the bureaucracy of State oversight.

- Begin with grades K to 5 and establish a day care/pre-school

- Hire local artists to teach. Fund interested artists to obtain teacher accreditation.....

Another thing that's missing from the Crossroad's besides schools: children.

Maybe someone could work on a way to expand the existing Mattie Rhodes program? It does essentially as described and is just a few blocks away where there are actually kids in the neighborhood.

You're both right. AV HS is in the West Side, AV MS is at 17th and Broadway.

According to the billboards and vinyl banners dotting the Crossroads, the area is full of orphan children in need of saving.

Charter school plans August opening in downtown Kansas City
Crossroads Academy of Kansas City plans to open in Downtown in August.

The charter school sponsored by the University of Central Missouri .. Board of Governors is preparing to open with 140 students in grades K-6. When it reaches full capacity, the school will serve 370 students in grades K-8.
A 2010 study commissioned by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation found that 18,103 people live in downtown Kansas City, including 1,629 elementary school children. There has been a 31 percent increase in downtown residents since 2000.
The school will be at 2100 Grand, on the 6th floor.

I was under impression that is where the initial office is to coordinate the school, not the school itself. Entire school on one floor?

'Greater' downtown, which includes the W Side/Summit area and Longfellow. Sounds like they'll give first dibs to 'greater downtown' residents and then open enrollment to rest of KCMO residents. Is an option for those who work downtown, just drop off the kid(s) on the way.

Received this email from my neighborhood group. Talks about the opening of the school Downtown and included the info I am quoting below...I probably could have pared it down, but maybe some people are interested in all the info and enrolling.
Founders:

Tysie McDowell-Ray- 15 yrs
experience as a teacher, educational consultant, and principal (tysie@crossroadsacademykc.org )

Dean Johnson- 15 yrs exp. as a teacher, principal, charter school
leader, and international humanitarian relief worker

To be the premier urban school serving Kansas City's youth and a
destination for other educators seeking inspiration and best practices.
Graduates of Crossroads Academy will be scholarly, culturally literate and
service oriented individuals who will pursue their dreams relentlessly and have
a positive impact on their family, their community and the world.

Location:

Will be located in the Greater Downtown Area. A location will be finalized by late spring.

Extended School Year and Day:

Students will attend school 197days/year, with a typical day lasting 8

Enrollment:

Student enrollment
applications available at the Launch Party and on the website. Applications will be accepted beginning
March 1. If there are more
applicants than spaces available in a particular grade level, then a lottery
will take place on March 31. As an independent charter school, Crossroads Academy is accessible to
any family living within the KCMO School District. Among these families, those
living or working within the Greater Downtown Area (State Line to Woodland, the
Missouri River to Linwood) receive priority in our admissions lottery. All
parents who are personally committed to high-expectations and want their child
to learn in an academically rigorous environment are encouraged to apply!

Three Pillars:

High
Expectations: Our teachers inspire students to actively seek knowledge and
understanding, think independently, reason critically and embrace challenges.
School-wide goals and expectations are owned by every student, staff member,
parent and board member. High-expectations and accountability for all
stakeholders creates a school environment in which every student can excel.

21st Century
Learning: Crossroads Academy students will master core subjects in a
curriculum anchored by the Framework for 21st Century Learning (p21.org). Our curriculum is embedded with project-based
experiences in technology and engineering, business and financial literacy, and
multicultural education. Students will acquire the academic foundation to excel
in high school, and the skills needed to be a successful global citizen.

Community
Engagement: Students engage the cultural, historic and civic amenities of
Downtown to deepen their academic studies. Students will participate in
service-learning, which is a strategy that teaches civic responsibility and
strengthens communities by integrating meaningful community service into the
curriculum and instruction. Each year,
students will participate in at least 2 service-learning projects.

There aren't many large empty candidate buildings left. Maybe the building that used to be a Thai restaurant, I think on 8th St? Any ideas where else they may locate? Maybe in an office building in the Loop? You'd think they'd have a short list by now.

The best building(s) by far (in my opinion) would be the old West High or Switzer schools in the Westside. However, there is no way they could rehab them in time for Fall 2012. Perhaps they could move in after being somewhere else temporarily. I would think it would make sense for KCMO to allow these properties to be repurposed into actual schools for actual KCMO students.
