Ugh. That reminds me of the perfectly nice apartment building (probably pre-1900 and not a common architectural design in KC) on 17th Street that was torn down for parking/staging for the construction of the Kauffman Center.
Yep. I haven't forgotten about that one. Really changed the character of that little stretch of 17th when it was demoed. Sad.

Lane building was still standing today. Looked untouched. I'm no demolition expert, but it seems like this is taking a while.

A couple of things...
1. I will miss the old design of the Lane Building. Even though I don't live in KC, I always loved the old design of the building.
2. They better have a replacement building ASAP. A parking lot along Main Street is a sorry excuse for such a prominent lot. LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION!
3. If I were to own the property, after this project is demolished, I would waste no time running to the City and saying "Here is my plan" and have a big and beautiful replacement lined up. I have no money so of course it won't be me, the current owners have their plans.
4. 12 Floors seems to small for this site, maybe something that is 20 floors would fit in just fine.

It involves asphalt and paint, right?

Or perhaps just more gravel.

My favorite part is any parking lot redo must follow current code. So it includes a green/fence buffer at both streets and a certain percent (20%) of the interior space must be green. You'll see a lot of parking lots degrading because the replacement cost of lots has become way more than just pavement.

I'm not convinced tearing down the building will result in additional parking unless the city waives this requirement. This is something to watch.

Is there still no plan besides parking? I'm having nightmares that this site won't get developed for decades.

Per CitySceneKC in November, there's still a longer term plan to build a 15 story building: https://cityscenekc.com/historic-crossr ... ment-site/

I'd hope they announce something once the new convention hotel is officially open.
