How's the restaurant doing these days? I've read some awful reviews in Yelp but I've wanted to go back as I've not been there in 25 years.

The restaurant has way too many items on menu to do any well. They need to get a contemporary James Beard aspiring chef who can focus on a fewer range of great items. Would think they'll make changes with restaurant along with restoration.

a loose-lipped waiter (since 1983!) says the building is finally changing hands. expect the entire operation to close during restoration. grab a cocktail at the bar while you can!

The renovation and rehabilitation of the 125 year-old building would preserve the building’s historic features while creating a new space for visitors and residents of Kansas City to experience genuine hospitality, view contemporary art and participate in cultural programming.

went on sunday's historic KC tour. while the lobby, dining rooms, and exterior are preserved, the rest of the interior is a mish-mash of badly-executed updates. will be interesting to see how much is restored. hopefully that old lady that minds the till in the dining room will be retained, as well.

Sounds like they need to pull a Union Carbide/Lane Printers type of renovation. Keep the cool historic aspects but tear out the rest for modern amenities.

I'm glad the fire department was able to respond quickly. This could have gone wrong very quickly, and we could have lost a very important building in our City's history.

Mine too. Wife and I had our one year anniversary dinner here (30 years ago). I've not heard great things about the Savoy Grill of late but the idea that I can never go back really gets me down.

It had devolved into quite the bizarre collection of historical bones, regrettable remodels and over-priced food. Very happy to see 21c take care of its legacy.
