Hey, check it out!  The printing press must have been modeled after this McDonald's, located in Chicago.

Wow...the new Star FYI looks great. I usually deride the "USA Today" look for a newspaper, but they outdid themselves on this one. The Star never pretended to be some great journalistic record anyway so I'm glad they got such a modern and interesting new look. The smaller size is also nice as I read it a lot on the bus. Good job to the KC Star on its makeover so far. I'm still getting used to the way everything is moved around, but it's a night and day difference...

The color comics are a nice touch.  Looking forward to seeing the rest of the paper roll out soon.

Beermo....when the whole paper is on the new presses, will the FYI be printed at the same time as the other sections, or still separately?

I think the new sections look sharp and distinctive, as well.  The decrease in size definitely makes reading it more convenient (it's certainly nice not having to use so much wing span to fold the crossword), and the rich colors seem to make me more inclined to read pieces that I typically wouldn't.  It is a wonderful new look thus far and I'm eagerly awaiting the full makeover.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is my very first post.  Now on to bigger and better ones...

i dunno. i doubt it though. probably separately. yesterday was the first day of my crew's new schedule up at the new plant. noon to 7:30 m-f. we printed the majority of today's fyi on our press because the other press had problems they had to work out. my crew didn't get off until 11pm. we're not getting as dirty as we used to, but it's a lotta work trying to familiarize yourself with the new presses. so we'll see.

the crossroads community association got a personalized tour of the star press pavilion last week, including a brief address by publisher mac tully. one interesting thing he mentioned was that since they've been running the facility full-time, they haven't had any window glass broken out. before "the lights were on", they lost 40-something panes. also, the cost to disassemble the old presses would eat up all of the money to be made on scrap metal, since the machines are practically worthless for their stated function. the old press building will be repurposed for office space for star employees that are spread out in the metro.

that automated paper machine is fascinating. you can see it operate from outside the building on truman road, by the way... no tour required!

i never saw you. you guys must have got the regular tour, where they let you look thru the windows like at the zoo. did you even get on the press floor?

if you don't disassemble the old presses, you'll never get them out of the building. it's true though, the old hoes are trashed. nobody wants that kind of stuff.

you can get a much better and more personalized tour if you know someone from within.

oh yeah, i guess the tour itself wasn't personalized. however, i would guess that mr tully doesn't personally address every tour group?

mac hasn't even addressed me and i work there, so i guess you are important. if you got out on the floor and got to walk on the presses that would be a tour. great views of dt up on the press on the west side of the building.

The Monday-Saturday comics are no longer printed in color.  Why bother if you're not going to stick with it?

Ok..  The Giant "T" is now gone and has been replaced with a digital clock of some sorts.
