TODAY! 8th St. Tunnel Tour!

Post by PumpkinStalker »

TODAY

11:00 TO 1:30 THERE IS APPARENTLY A TOUR OF THE 8TH ST. TUNNEL.

I received my info from the lady that heads the walking tours division of the Historic Kansas City Foundation (of which I'm proudly a member)

The email said she knew a friend that worked at State Street and anyone can go.  Just show up at the parking garage under the building.

I have already made arrangements to get off work at 10:00 and will be there.

Perhaps I'm retarded, but what is the 8th St. Tunnel?

It's an old street car tunnel that goes down to the west bottoms, but it's been closed and mostly hidden for decades.

Where does is exit the loop?  It must be visable from street level if it was a streetcar track.

It was an underground tunnel that began underground at 8th and Broadway -- the little park with the fountain there at 8th and Broadway was the starting point for it heading down into the bottoms...and became a park when it was filled in.  I so wish I'd found out about this in time to go...

Here are the pics I took.  Completely awesome.  It truly was a 10 year dream materialized.  I've been itching to get inside this thing for years.

HUGE turn out.  I stayed longer so that the guy would take me further down the tunnel than what he wanted the groups to go.  At the end is a 50 ft drop off that goes into the second tunnel that was dug beneath the original.

I've done a little bit of research on it in the past couple years so if you have questions, throw them out.

This cubby hole originally held a lantern before lighting was installed.  Also provided some shelter to workers from a passing trolley.

Anyone know what the rules of ownership might be on something like this? Is it just a long series of easements beneath property owned by others, is it city owned or... ?

Looks amazing... wish I could've been there too.

How about a rehab into a wine bar or trendy restaurant. Wouldn't that be cool?
