Downtown needs larger police presence

I know there was a zero tolerance mandate that went to KCK cops when the Legends opened up.  City Hall perceived it as "we've got one chance at this, let's not scrwe it up."  It seems to work just fine, I've seen no vandalism, no fights or crime out there at all.

While I was getting my hair cut this morning my stylist said that in 2 weeks the city is going to start having police foot patrols throughout the loop and also add a night shift for the DCID yellowjackets.  She said it was to help visitors to the arena and P&L feel safer but that the patrols would be permanent and spread throughout the loop.

Can anyone verify this?

patrol cops in their cruisers are already making their presence known around dt. my buddy boston rob, who btw is the top training officer for bikes in the kcpd has been working is ass off training new to bikes, cops. i called him last week about something and asked him if he was working. he said he was right in the middle of a training session at bartle hall with about 30 cops. he told me that dt will have a large cop presence that will include cops on horses and bikes. 

we'll see.

I went last weekend to Fiesta Hispania downtown. I decided to walk around the new arena and the Cordish development. Then I walked over to city hall and the park there. I was scared to be walking through that park and I was in front of a Federal Court House and City hall/police HQ.

I walked the perimeter of the park in a loop. I heard more than a few "hey baby"'s and "do you have a couple dollars for the bus" translation= do you have a couple dollars I can use to buy crack. And this was in the early evening.

Is this what people have to look forward to at the Cordish development. I hope Cordish employs their own security force, because if the KCMO police can't protect a two block park next to police HQ they sure as hell aren't going to be able to protect people in the eight block Cordish district.

Times have changed and the board of police commissioners only serves to prevent the department from being accountable to the citizenry.

It is high time the state dissolves the board of police commissioners and puts the KCMO police department back under the purview of the city manager, the elected Representatives of the people and in turn the voters.

The last thing the PD needs is for the city to be running it.  The BOPC fixed the PD, and has continued to be effective.  There is no reason to go back to being city controlled.  It'll get all Funked up.  They don't need that Cromagnum penny pincher making the PD any less equipped and prepared than they already are.

FYI- Your little rant about Illus Davis Park is pointless.  You say the PD can't control a block or two from police headquarters.  Nothing illegal happened to you, so why would the police need to babysit you as you walk through a park.  Grow a pair.  People can yell "Hey Baby" and ask for money whether a cop is standing there or not.  Those are the kind of people that flock to downtown's to try to make a buck.  It's not just a KC thing.  If you don't like them talking to you, just tell them you will smash them in the face if they don't leave you alone.  That usually works.

I can't verify it, but it's been widely circulated via rumors for months that this would happen.  Another thread mentioned bike patrols coming soon Downtown.  I would consider your source reliable.  Could always email KCPD and ask.

in reality davis park is a great hookup if you want to buy a  ho or some crack.

There is already a footbeat on the daytime shift, and Central Patrol Division is adding a footbeat with bikes on the evening shift.  They are also realigning the boundaries, so that Westport will be in Metro Patrol Division.  I think I heard the boundary will move from 47th up to 39th street.  This would allow more officers to be in the downtown area, as opposed to dealing with Westport and P&L on a weekend.

Davis park is a problem that needs to be dealt with.  With it being in the government district, everything shuts down at 5pm and everybody leaves...so nobody to complain or look over the park....don't think that's a reflection of KCPD and downtown in general.


Can't wait for improved foot patrols and bike patrols downtown....they need to remember to patrol all of downtown, especially the areas just outside of the P&L where people could be walking from parking garages...not that's it's dangerous now, but it gives people peace of mind.

Based on the reports from presentations to the City, Cordish will indeed have their own full-time security force and employ off-duty KCPD.  The SC already has a security force.

At the DNA meeting Wed night the officer in attendance confirmed that eight new bike cops would be added in shifts from 5pm-3am for the loop, so there would be two separate groups of two any given weeknight and three groups of two on Fri/Sat night (4 teams of two X 4 10hr shifts/week each).  He said they were "young bucks," zealous rookies who had about another week before completing training to be deployed.  They will be centered in the loop, possibly patrolling parts of the Rivermarket/near crossroads as necessary.  They will be adjusting the patrol patterns tactically as warranted by crimes, etc, but inside the loop is the focus.  He also said that mounted patrol and foot cops would be out "in force" for Sprint center events heavily patrolling the entire DT area for the sake of pedestrians throughout the area.  He made clear that the new regular scheduled shifts would NOT be inside the entertainment district but rather concentrated on the rest of the loop.  I assume Cordish security will have control of the district, based on this.

that officer was probably "boston rob". he's the head bike trainer for the kcpd. one of the nicest and coolest cops you would ever meet.

most adults i know that do not like cops are the ones who cops are always busting. like every group on the planet there are always assholes in every bunch, but there is a reason cops exist and that is to protect you and your property from criminals. i wouldn't want to be one. they have to deal with way to much shit and the dregs of society. funny thing is though that most of them love their jobs. they are really into it and love to tangle it up.

Too bad most of the ones I have had a pleasure to deal with are power freaks, but I would rather have middle aged meat heads on a power trip than young wanta be thugs breaking into my car for a $5 face plate.

Oh yeah and the KCPD needs to patrol around Skybox in the rivermarket from 2-4 on fri-sat nights.
