Former Stork Club building. The building has a series of other restaurants and nightclubs that occupied it: Vanity Fair, The Paramount Club, the Eighty-Five Club, Casa Fiesta, the Club Royale, and the Wayside Manor.

It will be interesting to see the final product of this building. Last I was over there the entire facade had been altered.

Re: Misc Crossroads News
Yes I'm wondering why they ripped off the entire facade. It was a good lookin one, fit in nicely to the area.

Helzberg! (Actually I don't know.)Midtownkid wrote:Yes I'm wondering why they ripped off the entire facade. It was a good lookin one, fit in nicely to the area.
Re: Misc Crossroads News
It was sagging. Could have likely repaired it and bought a decade or two. However, the Helzbergs make decisions from a 100 year viewpoint and even not knowing the final image, I anticipate this is going to look good.smh wrote:Helzberg! November 1st? I don't think so...

It's a shame. The building was pretty average, but ripping off the facade and (presumably) going modern sets it up for the "what the hell do we do with this ugly, dated thing?" debate in 30 years. Downtown and the Crossroads are full of buildings that were modernized to a point that they've become disposable, and I'd guess that's where this will wind up. Leaving the facade in place would have avoided that, and probably been a hell of a lot cheaper.

Re: Misc Crossroads News
Without seeing the final product, I agree that this is probably a mistake. These kind of modernizations CAN turn out good, but more often than not it is a big mistake. The building was a handsome one to begin with, so I'm a little concerned. I just don't fully understand why you would want to modernize the facade of a lovely old classic. There is plenty of space to build new close by.chaglang wrote:It's a Helixberg project.smh wrote:Helzberg! Can't wait for the store to open though, as I just moved close by. I have a feeling it will be a bit more expensive than I'd like though.

Re: Misc Crossroads News
A blurb in today's Business Journal says that the new facade on 1706 Baltimore is being completely restored to its original look. It mentioned that the mortar on the brick had turned completely to dust and the whole thing was going to fall off eventually.

Re: Misc Crossroads News
Does this mean there will be two arcades in Xroads after Screenland reopens? Or is this where the machines went from the former Screenland location?

Re: Misc Crossroads News
Another concept that would work well here is a Laundromat that has a bar or coffee shop in it, maybe they serve a little bit of food. I think something like that would be a successful in the crossroads or westport like where that open fire pizza place use to beDaveKCMO wrote:barcade concept coming to the old hamburger mary's spot: http://updowndsm.com/

Re: Misc Crossroads News
No, something that is a little hip and appeals to young professionals, college kids and hipsters. You load your laundry, order a coffee or beer while you wait for the load to finish. Its a growing concept in larger cities.flyingember wrote:You want a trio.
