What happened was whoever hosts the website where some random picture posted here was hotlinked from, replaced the formerly innocuous photo with hard core porn. It's the quintessential asshole sonofabitch way to get people to remove a photo hotlinked from your site and thus eating away at your bandwidth.

Really though, I don't understand the point of getting all in a fuss over someone hotlinking photos from your site; to this day there are hotlinks out there on Chinese message board forums where someone went crazy posting my KC pictures, but I still have plenty of alotted bandwidth for my site with my hosting company, so I really don't care what they do.

No, it's a script that makes sure that whatever page the picture is being displayed on is authorized. It's actually pretty simple, and I think it's a fully justified measure. Maybe not quite so obscene, but I completely understand. The internet ain't free.

You might understand if you get charged for bandwidth, or have a low periodic limit on your http transfers. You have no right to condemn someone for restricting your use of their money.

No. Nobody was hacked. That sick picture was a deliberate measure taken by a victim of hotlinking, to get people to stop using up his bandwidth. It's kind of complicated to explain, but basically, a rule was set up by the victim to make a certain picture appear when someone tries to hotlink their pictures. This person chose an obviously offensive picture to get their point across.

However, whether a person on a webhost is storing illicit/explicit material or not is between the customer and the hosting provider.
