Database Crash - forum downtime
Database Crash - forum downtime
I had about 17 IMs flashing at me when I got back from lunch. It looks like the host where this forum is hosted had a database crash, and corrupted the message data irreparably. Instead of opening a ticket and waiting for support, I took matters into my own hands and called today's data a loss. When I took control of this forum, I set up a daily process to take a full database backup and store it on my machine at home, and I'm sure glad I did. I imported the data from last night's daily backup, and it appears that we're back in business.
Unfortunately, we've lost all the entries that have been posted since 12:45am.

Here's the message that I got:
What I relief that I didn't cause the problem! I was afraid that I had hit the wrong button on the keyboard, causing the forum to blow up and kill people. 8-[Internal Server Error

I can't believe that all of the incredibly wise and insightful comments I made this morning will be lost to posterity! How will society cope?

I thought I was going crazy. Could have sworn I had made a couple of posts that disappeared.

Big meh.
I've submitted a ticket to the host, but I've also taken matter into my own hands, and set up an hourly backup instead of the daily one that we had before. It's going to use a lot of bandwidth(~1GB per day), but those are the breaks when your host can't keep a database from corrupting itself.

Sorry everyone. I just spent all afternoon deleting everyone's posts because I am an overhanded moderator who has let power go to his head! BWA-HA HA HA HA HA HA!!!
Re: Database Crash - forum downtime
This is the page that you saw when I was restoring the database. I renamed the forum directory so that nothing would attempt to be written, restored it, and then renamed it back.AllthingsKC wrote:Internal Server Error

I'm so glad that none of my wisdom-filled posts were lost, just the stupid ones I made.
Edit: I have to go change my avatar again, too! :x Do you know how hard that is to do?

Lame.
I guess taking 10min at lunch to research a post I had to Powercat was totally worthless, b/c the forum doesn't even work that well. I can see once in 6 months, but this is 2x in what? A week or two? What's the point in posting if you're not even sure it'll be on there later in the day?
Sucks.

As I said, steps have been taken to ensure that a loss like this won't happen again.
Unfortunately, web fora are pretty crappy pieces of software.

FYI: I have uninstalled the tagging system. I suspect it had a hand in the corruption.
