KC in TV and Movies

Post by staubio »

As suggested in another thread, here is the grand KC media frenzy thread. I'd like to keep track of places KC has appeared on TV, radio, movies, etc.

I know of the U2 music video shot here and the movie "The Day After," which is supposedly set here and has a modified KC skyline on the cover. You've got Altman's "Kansas City" and a ton more.

I know that a year or more ago a movie list was posted. The recent trend was on TV, so I thought I'd start something new going.

HBO's "Truman" movie was partially shot here. "Ride With the Devil" was shot in some of the outlying areas. "City Heat" was set here but shot on a constructed set.

You can find a whole bunch here:

To see other parts of the metro, just replace the appropriate geographic names in that URL.

Article 99 was set in a fictional Veteran's Hospital in KC, but it was filmed in the old St. Mary's Hospital next to the Liberty Memorial.

Andy Taylor's girlfriend, Helen Crump, was from Kansas City (on the show, not real life). An episode featured her in some past "scandal" back in Kansas City and Andy dug up an old KC newspaper about her. They made her out to be from the Big City.

Missouri is in 'Control' at the box office

Locally-made film hits the big screen

(JEFFERSON CITY, Mo.) The Missouri Film Commission in conjunction with Kansas City-based Waldo West Productions is proud to announce the world premiere of the feature film thriller "Control" starring Sean Young, Will Schaub and William Devane.

The premiere will take place on October 18th at 7:30 p.m. at the Dickinson Theaters WestGlen 18 at I-435 and Midland Drive in Shawnee, Kansas for an invitation-only audience that will include Executive Producer Charles Nelson, Producer Dennis Fallon, Director Tom Whitus, Director of Photography Fred Paddock, Los Angeles-based actors and much of the local cast and crew.

Following the premiere, "Control" will have a theatrical run in the Kansas City area through Dickinson Theaters.

Shot entirely in the Kansas City area in November and December of 2000, "Control" is the story of a troubled ex-boxer (Schaub) who is searching for his missing brother at the request of his domineering father (Devane). The clues lead to a psychologist (Young), who is under investigation by the police for her possible involvement with the disappearance of several men, including the ex-boxer's missing brother.

The movie (Control)you are talking about was renamed, "Threat of Exposure".

A guy from KC did a user review on it. From what I've been reading, this movie :puke:

In The Silence Of The Lambs, isn't Kansas City cited as the origin of the cannibal's "Buffalo Bill" nickname?

It sure is KCOKEK.

I was watching CourtTV or something and they have this show where they follow cops around on tough cases during the first 48 hours of a case, because those are the most critical hours. Anyway, they followed around two sets of detectives, one in KCK, the other in KCMO. The cops in KCMO solved the murder quickly, but the cops in KCK never solved the case, and it remains unsolved to this day.

Aside from this, there was a 30 minute special on the Food channel a while back about barbeque in Kansas City. The thing was it was only KC, not a whole bunch of other cities too.

I saw that one, which I think was hosted by Bobby Flay. I also saw another one on the annual BBQ contest at the American Royal.

I also remember an HGTV show that featured a couple of homes in the Scarritt (sp.?) neigborhood. That was at least three years ago.

Better Homes & Gardens magazine features a couple of Kansas City homes each year, probably because one of their writers is based here.

Speaking of Court TV and (semi-) local ties, they're in Columbia:

i think D'Bronx deli was featured on an episode of the Food Network's Ten Best (it was for deli's i think, ((not pizza)) )
KC Region is all part of the same animal regardless of state and county lines.
Think on the Regional scale.

Ride With the Devil was shot IN kansas city as well as in outlying areas. They had a soundstage near the flamingo casino in an old soundproof warehouse where all the int shots of the house and some of the ext. "field" shots were filmed. I worked on the production.

Also, in the Godfather (part 1) i believe, there is a reference to Kansas City when the dons meet and say "blah is here from NY, blah is here from Kansas City"

In Topgun, in the bar, there is a Kansas city poster in clear view on the wall behind Tom Cruise for much of a few of the scenes that take place there. There is one scene where it is static on the poster.

this is just off the top of my head.

oh yeah, there is a Modern Marvels on the History Channel that is about worst engineering disasters and it focuses a good deal on the Hyatt Skywalk tragedy as the worst human-error engineering disaster ever or soemthing. good watch, but sad.

Also, a movie "the painting" was shot in KC two years ago -- filmed mostly in Mission Hills mansions (the big one near george brett's) and some churches i think on the missouri side. It was a high low-budget movie (maybe made for TV). I think william macy *may* have been in it. There was someone pretty famous.

And, of ccourse, Chris Cooper is from KC. He never really references it, but he has been in a TON of films and recently won a golden globe for adaptation.

ok. I'm a history channel nerd sometimes.

On the "modern marvels" with the "dangerous cargo" episode, they talk about real-life con-air. That whole long segment was filmed at downtown KC's airport. they show prisoners from leavenworth i think getting on the plane in big shackes, etc and talk about the secrecy and that they use the KC airport frequently. It doesnt really show good downtown KC shots though

on the day after tomorrow, they have the central part of our skyline on the left, and on the right they have the western part with the tops of 1KCP, P&L, and Town Pavilion cut off.
