Re: About Schmidt

The production actually came to Lawrence. I don't know if they were just here to buy stuff or to film. It seems like they were here to film also, but it seems most of it got left on the cutting room floor. Nothing against NU (Omaha boosters, sit down) but KU's campus is much more photogenic than Nebraska's and that scene in the movie proved it.

They shot some pre-production shots in Lawrence, but it came down to money, and it was more convenient to shoot the actual scenes in Lincoln since most of the movie was filmed in Omaha.

Alexander Payne, the director, is from Omaha, and has set a few of his movies (Election, About Schmidt) in his hometown (obviously he didn't set his Oscar nominated film "Sideways" in Omaha).

We need more KC filmmakers to produce movies that show KC! Robert Altman is a great start, but we need to develop more!

i remember on the Real World (Seattle), one of the cast members (a foster child or something) went to meet his real family, who lived in Stilwell, KS.

of course, the character (nathan?) mentioned "yeah i am going to visit my family in Kansas City!" like 500 times, they showed KCI, some highway signs, etc. no city shots.

then they cut in with an MTV-style montage of cows, a silo, etc., ultimately focusing on the rural yokel family he was visiting. nevermind there is that place in Stilwell that sells Ferraris and shit. haha

Chriz, on the recent San Diego season of the Real World we were treated to Frankie and her boat phobia. She was deathly afraid of boats.

Apparently between the flamer from Stillwell and Frankie from Blue Springs, the MTV honchos began to suspect something was in the water here in the KC metro, as they produced and frequently aired a commercial featuring some chick writing a letter that read as follows:

"Dear MTV;

On every season of the Real World, there is always a crazy person, and that crazy person usually comes from Kansas City. I was just wondering, do you have some kind of arrangement with Kansas City? If so, I would really like to know.

Keepin' it real,
Karen"

It went something like that, but anyway, I found it amusing.

Haha, oh man, Todd Sheets is a trip. I worked as an extra in two or three movies he was involved with (who didn't?)...pretty fun stuff. He recorded a couple of my bands for his record label, too, but nothing ever came of it. As far as I know he's not making movies much anymore; now you can catch him in local bands Descension and Jedi Superstar. Pretty cool guy.

I saw an episode of a show called "Mastermind" on A&E this weekend, and it was about the Tivol jewelry heist on the Plaza a few years back. That was a smooth job, and it really showed that organized crime in KC is still around. Also they showed off the Plaza and made it up to be like 5th Avenue in New York. It sounded and looked great.

Also I was watching a show called Food Finds and they were in KC and visited like 5 restaurants including Jack Stack and the Peachtree.

Then there was this show on the travel channel and this guy was at the American Royal BBQ. I wish more KC area BBQ people were interviewed though all the people from out of town had positive things to say about KC.

Other reality show stars: Dan, from the Real World Miami, the gay one, was from Overland Park (BV North grad).

Shandi, on America's Top Model was from Kansas City. She's the one that cheated on her boyfriend back in KC.

I thought that the exterior shots of the KU scene were filmed at KU. I haven't spent much time on the KU campus, so I could be wrong, but it sure looked like it.

God I want a DT ballpark so bad it hurts.
I'll take farms over junkyards and trailer parks, which sadly would be more accurate.

This was on TV Land last nite...they're doing a "TV Movie" week. It's being rerun at some point over the weekend - I think they're doing an all nite marathon of the movies they've aired this week. As they say, consult yer local listings.

I watched it last nite, & thought it held up pretty well, BTW.

I just noticed that that DVD cover must be updated art, because the skyline shot contains at least 3 buildings that did not exist yet when this movie was made.  :)

A number of years ago, maybe 1999 or 2000, Steven Spielberg sent a scouting team to KC to check out Hunt Midwest's Subtropolis and some other underground facilities to film an "end of the world" film.  I wonder if it was War of the Worlds... anyway, it didn't pan out.

I believe Dan from the Real World Miami is still living in OP, he's been to NV a few times, and last year or so he was arrested for lewd behavior (i believe) at a KC porn theatre. Also on the new real world austin, Wes is from KCK...he seems normal this far.

Wes said he was from Leawood in the season premiere. But you're right, MTV's The Real World has a long history of drawing nutsoes from the Kansas City area.

I'm from JoCo, but when I'm away from KC, I tell people I'm from Kansas City, and they always ask "kansas side or missouri side" and I say "kansas side". So people assume I'm from KCK. I bet they confused the same thing with Wes.

For whatever reason, the godawful Martin Lawrence basketball comedy "Rebound", in theaters now, uses downtown KC as some of its establishing shots even though it's set in Ohio.

Tonight I watched Prime Cut, which has to be one of the weirdest movies I've ever seen. The more bizarre moments include:
  • Lee Marvin and Sissy Spacek being chased by a combine through a wheat field outside Lawrence. The chase ends with the combine eating a Cadillac. No kidding.
  • A Chicago hitman looks around the West Bottoms and says, "Jesus, what a bare-ass town."
  • A shootout in a field of sunflowers.
  • Naked Missouri women, including Sissy Spacek, in a hog pen.

I just saw a commercial for a movie called "Four Brothers" which seemed to be some sort of action film.  Anyway, it was none other than the Kansas City skyline shown in the commercial.  Anyone know anything about this movie?  I didn't watch closely but I think it was Mark Walberg I saw.  I could be wrong.
