That reminds me of another flick: In Casino, one of the pivotal scenes is in a deli in Kansas City. That's where the FBI, eavesdropping, first learns about who's running the Vegas casinos.

I don't think they are talking about Kansas City, dude. See the movie first.

The small town they are referring to Devin is Lawrence. Which, when compared on a national scale, it is small and, it's in Kansas.

Why do they have the two photos of KCMO on the front then? I know they nuked KC, but it looks bad to KCMO talk about Lawrence and show KCMO.

The movie Silver Streak with Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder has shots of DTKC and they say the name of the city quite a few times.

They show Union Station, inside and out on Silver Streak.

Anyhow, the 2004 Kansas International Film Festival will be showing "Bazaar Bizarre" at the Glenwood Arts on Thursday, September 16th at 7:45pm. Tickets to the film are $10.

Both cities play a large role in the movie. The movie is about several different people/families. One lives in Harrisonville, the doctor (Jason Robarts) works at a hospital in KC, John Lithgow is a professor (I believe) at KU in Lawrence and then there's a family living in Sedalia whose husband is stationed at Whiteman. By the end of the movie, most of the people come together in Lawrence somehow or another. But KC ans Lawrence both play a significant role.

I watched the first part the other night just to see the flyovers of KC and the cool shots of the city. There were more than I remembered. Man, I must say...I didn't quite realize how much downtown has changed since 1983. WOW!

Devin, if you get a chance to rent/buy or see it...I would suggest doing so to get the full scope of how the two cities play a role in the movie.

It's been a while since I saw the movie, but as I recall, when Jason Robards is on the highway as the attack starts, there are multiple mushroom clouds -- as in Lawrence, KC and other nearby cities and military sites were nuked simultaneously.

Mikko, an exchange student from Finland, arrives in Kansas City. He is expecting to spend a year in the centre of the big city but the plans have already changed. He has a new host family, who live on a farm far outside the city. The life in the countryside becomes much more exciting when he gets to know the sheriff's daughter and falls in love. Too bad that the father doesn't allow it. When the harmless trip to the out-of-town bar goes terribly wrong, Mikko has to face a very serious reality. The concealed hatred between certain characters doesn't make the situation any easier.

I saw Mr. and Mrs. Bridge which stars Joanne Woodward and Paul Newman. It centers on a couple in the 1940s who life in Mission Hills. Tons of references to KC including camera shots of the Plaza, Liberty Memorial and including references to Ward Parkway, KU, Olathe-- all the nods to KC are very accurate and interesting. The Liberty Memorial shot is taken when the Bridge's son taking his date up to Penn Valley Park to make out.

Besides, the KC tie ins...a very well-acted movie.

It's not a movie, but why does MLB baseball on PS2 have farms in the background. I know there is not much out there, but there is a highway, a couple of hotels and other buildings. These games will go through lots of trouble to duplicate an urban skyline for other cities yet they give us farms.

God I want a DT ballpark so bad it hurts.

"The Day After"
The premiere of this TV movie was a major media event. No sponsors bought commercial time after the point in the movie where the nuclear war occurs, so the last half of the show was aired straight through, without commercials.

Immediately after the film's original broadcast, it was followed by a special news program, featuring a live discussion between scientist Dr. Carl Sagan (who opposed the use of nuclear weapons) and Conservative writer William F. Buckley Jr. (who promoted the concept of "nuclear deterrence"). It was during this heated discussion, aired live on network television, where Dr. Sagan introduced the world to the concept of "nuclear winter" and made his famous analogy, equating the nuclear arms race with "two men standing waist deep in gasoline; one with three matches, the other with five".

The film is set mostly in Lawrence, Kansas, which was chosen by the screenwriters as a way to dramatize how nuclear war would affect everyone. During the Cold War, it was theorized that Lawrence, Kansas would be one of the few cities completely unaffected by nuclear war as it is near the exact geographic center of the United States.

University of Kansas Lawrence students were used as extras, and asked not to bathe during the aftermath scenes to add authenticity to the movie.

Some of the scenes were shot on location in Kansas City, Missouri. Jason Robards can be seen walking through the rubble of the old St. Joseph Hospital, which was actually being demolished at the time.

Errors in geography: When the missiles are being launched from the Kansas base, there are mountains in the background. There are no mountains in Kansas.

There was a TV show starring Eddie Griffin called "Eddie" with Malcolm Jamal-Warner that was set in KC. They owned a bar with Chiefs stuff all over it.

The movie "About Schmidt" has Jack Nicholson's character going back to his alma mater - the University of Kansas. They show a sign that says "Welcome to Kansas" but the scenes were actually shot at the University of Nebraska. I was in Lawrence for the screening of this movie and that scene was booed.
