I really expected to have some large, direct mail pieces by now. Disappointed.

Are they going to debate sometime in the next two months?

There will be 6 debates, 6 other events with both candidates. https://www.kmbc.com/article/kc-mayoral ... s/27080030

Remington's pollster score from fivethirtyeight is a C: https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/pollster-ratings/

Given the rumors about who's helping who, this should probably be considered a campaign poll.

I don't think any of the failed mayoral candidates have endorse Justus or Lucas? It's mostly been the failed endorsements adjusting to the general match-up for the past few weeks.

I have a Jolie sign in my yard and plan to vote for her, but embarrassingly I do not really know how I would differentiate her from Quinton (who I also like). Had a neighbor ask me this and I didn't have a good answer. Can Dave or some other local politics wonk maybe summarize some key differences, if any?

To me the biggest differentiation is that she is a known quantity and the quantity is all positive. We know how she handles power because we can see how she operated in Jeff City. We can see/hear how she operates at Shook as head of Pro Bono services. We also know that she does not care who gets credit for success. She is deeply pragmatic and practical. She starts from a position of Yes, and figures out how to get there--something I think is very important because so often City Hall says No simply because they're so internally focused.

While perhaps similar in outlook and vision, we can't say the same about Quinton. What we can say is that while on Council it has been difficult to know how he will vote on a given issue even when that issue seems firmly in his wheelhouse. There are often suggestions that he goes along with Shields on votes or she has reason to believe that he will. To me, these add up to uncertainty and the sort of gamesmanship that I'm not interested in at the City level.

That's my sort of poorly honed elevator pitch anyway.

And I think it's false to say that Justus it the "status quo" candidate and Lucas is the "back to basics" candidate. If you look at their voting records on the Council, they're remarkably similar.

Which pretty much leaves you with leadership style and/or likability.

That's a great point about her time in jeff city that I didn't think about.

That could also backfire with some voters though.

I had lunch in Jeff City back when Justus had been elected and I sat next to two OLD white men who were also Missouri congressmen. I overheard their conversation which centered around trying to find Democrats to support some of their Republican initiatives. One of the men said 'I can't believe it, but the the Dem I'm most impressed with is that Joe Lee Justus - and she's a woman, gay and from Kansas City!'

I'll also add that it took a remarkable amount of diplomacy by Justus to get NewKCI through a fractious council. Regardless of which side of the debate you were on, having a mayor with the skills to accomplish something like that is a major plus in a weak mayor system.
