So, KC metro has a higher GDP than STL? Surprising.

what phuqueue said. I was just trying to give a sense of how our regions counties stack up to the larger counties in the StL area- Not try to make a comparison between StL region and Kc region.

But it does show you how about half of our region's GDP is in KS and thus dilutes the weight we can throw around in state politics. MO side counties don't even equal StL county GDP.

As much as we complain about our metro development though, it's illustrative to see that our metro GDP ($115.4 billion) exceeds GDP of many countries around the world. It puts things in perspective.

This really highlights how much influence Johnson County should/will have over Kansas. 19% of the population (2015), 29% percent of the GDP (2015), and 47% of GDP growth (2012-2015).

Edit:

Missouri side of KC is 23.39% of MO economy, STL 45.27%. KC was responsible for 42.48% of MO GDP growth during that period, but I used all 9 counties.

The metro area is about the size of Slovenia or El Salvador

Slovenia actually has a slightly lower population, so they have a higher GDP per capita than Metro KC. Crazy to think that there are countries that are that small.

Even though they have a smaller GDP than metro KC, and presumably a much smaller budget than the state of Missouri, their educational system is much better. 12th best education system in the world, 4th in the EU. 84% of their secondary school grads go to tertiary schools (university). Their top university is in the top 3% in the world.

Edit - clarity

I badly want to invest in Slovenia and need the courage to do it. I fell in love with the place. The road infrastructure is amazing and very modern. I think the place is gonna grow like crazy over next decade. The airport has absolutely nothing around it and the country is looking for investors to build hotels and restaurants around the airport.

The comparison in GDP is between countries and the Kansas City Metro, not the State of Missouri. For comparison though, Missouri's GDP in 2012 was $252.6 Billion. Slovenia's was $45.2 Billion.

Slovenia's population in 2015 was 2,074,788. Missouri's in 2015 was 6,072,640. I'm using 2015 because it was the closest date I could find for Slovenia to the 2012 GDP numbers.

I've seen several positive articles encouraging tourism to Slovenia, i.e. "Best Places to Visit." I would imagine that Slovenia could eventually be very competitive with Italy for tourism.

Slovenia houses one of my favorite hotels anywhere: the Vila Bled, on Lake Bled -- unbelievably attractive area. The people are good-looking, too.

There is a Slovenian church in KCK adjoining Strawberry Hill, although the Slovenes and Croats never liked each other even when they came here.

Sorry, I should have worded that better. I went back and edited it. My point was just that they have a top tier university with a small economy.

This new Delta flyer shows the benefit and positive impact of having HQs in ones city. HQs (and even regional offices/hqs) bring significant amounts of outside money into a community - boosting regional GDP. IMHO, we need to shift from having our companies get bought out to being the ones buying others out.
