Great Article but why wouldn't dst just take the company private when he was receiving pushback from investing in KC, he'll why don't more companies threaten to take companies private when they are receiving all this pressure. Theartening to take companies private is a good way to get these fucks off your back.

Are there any investment funds that just invest in just local Kansas City companies? Might be a good way to encourage growth in companies with a strong local civic presence and be a tool to fight off negative outside influence like what happened with DST. I wonder if the city or local investment firm, American Century?, could set this up. Put the local governments retirement funds in it, fire/police funds, etc.

"Threatening" to take a company private has to be done in a very specific way to avoid scrutiny from the SEC (and is often flat-out illegal). To my understanding, you have to prove it is a legitimate possibility and not just a ploy to manipulate your stock price (see Tesla). For it to be a legitimate possibility, you have to have someone or multiple someones willing to buy the company. If you don't have locally-minded people buying into the new private version of the company, you risk sabotage of the very reason for going private to begin with. Finally, if it is just a threat, investors may throw everyone out who is part of the threat, which would also backfire.
