City entity takes ownership of former Satchel Paige home
...
Although the house remains in bad shape, work has been underway behind the scenes on the property. In February the Kansas City Homesteading Authority bought the property by paying outstanding debts and liens against it.

"The plan from this point on is to stabilize the structure, clean it up, put a new roof on it and then eventually open it up to RFPs, requests for proposals," Baccala said.

“We want to move on this fairly quickly because we’re running out of time,” John Baccala told Zac Summers.

Oh the irony considering assessment debacle. Amazing how quickly officials can get it together isn't it? To bad they are not being more vocal and aggressive on assisting taxpayers caught up in the mess.

Push is on to remodel baseball legend Satchel Paige's Kansas City home
...
Two years ago, the city received a $150,000 grant from the National Trust for Historic Preservation  to remodel and stabilize the structure. The home now has a new roof. The city just finished up request proposals as to what to do next with the historic home and they are expecting to announce that plan later this month.

If the home becomes a museum, should it stay where it is now, or should it be moved somewhere else like the 18th and Vine District, or perhaps the Monarch Manor subdivision where Municipal Stadium used to be? I wonder if the 28th Street location would be too isolated to draw visitors in enough numbers to support a museum. I also wonder how neighbors would feel about visitors parking on their street all the time.

Current location:

Possible 18th and Vine site behind the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum. There is an obvious connection here and likely the same people who would visit the NLBM would visit the Paige home.

Possible Monarch Manor site. This site also has a historical connection, but would also be a bit isolated from other things. Neighbors might resent visitor street parking.

Leave it in place. (Building zoos are a personal pet peeve of mine.) If the rehab is counting on historic tax credits it's almost impossible to get them for a relocated building.

A coffee shop, event and meeting space, maybe even a bakery in the garage are possible features of a $3 million renovation plan for the fire-damaged former home of baseball great Leroy “Satchel” Paige on Kansas City’s east side.

“We don’t have it set in stone yet,” Vincent Gauthier, managing developer of Pitch Perfect KC, told a crowd of well-wishers, politicians and members of the news media at the project’s unveiling in a sweltering Monday morning news conference outside the 2 1/2-story home at 2626 E. 28th St.
