Also, Shields is an at-large candidate. If I recall, Shields lost the vote in-district, but won overwhelmingly the vote outside the district- especially on the east side.

Glover pissed off too many people.

He lost my vote when I was talking to him about an issue before a meeting and he just turned around and walked away without saying a word. If that was his attitude in general he would have lost to anyone.

True. Hopefully someone steps up who can show some leadership

IIRC Shields secured a spot on the Freedom, Inc mailer with a donation in the range of $2k. It wasn't much.

The active campaigning phase (for mayor) has already begun - I got a postcard over the weekend promoting meet-and-greets with one of the Scotts, and Jolie just put up a fundraising event on her FB page.

I've received two mailers from Taylor's campaign. Got a campaign kick off email from Justus.

Rumor has it that Jason Kander is considering a run for Mayor.

On his last podcast he did say that he had a big announcement to make soon, but a mayoral run would be surprising. He has been so involved with national politics that it will make it an interesting race, but if he won, the office of mayor (and Kansas City) would certainly have an elevated profile.

Nooooo! I mean, he'd be great and all but with such a high profile he should be running for something at the state or national level. He knows we have a weak mayor system, right?

I was hoping he would run for governor against Mike Parsons in 2020.

He'd have my vote. Giving KC a national presence would be a positive. Hopefully, he'd have a chance at getting support in Jeff City as well.

From the Republican majority that hates cities? Nah.

Yeah, I said ‘hopefully’. Don’t think it’s likely. I do think he would have a better chance to mobilize all Dems and maybe pull a few Republicans than any of the other possible mayoral candidates.

I'm sure he has his sights set on bigger things, but he's young (only 37) and relatively inexperienced. A term or two of any executive leadership would be useful to him - and I think great for the city.

Traditional paths to the White House are not necessarily going to be the norm going forward. And congress is such a shit show, you get downgraded for even being a part of it. I can see someone wanting to find a different way.

I'm surprised that any first term council member would want to run for mayor in a crowded field where they will be way outspent. It isn't like they can do much more than they currently do. People are negative about Kander's potential candidacy because he might be using it as a springboard to a higher office, but that is probably what Lucas is doing too. Not that there is anything wrong with that, that is exactly how politics should work.

I think the first-termers are looking to raise money for their future political endeavors. The money donated to their campaigns could be used for a state candidacy, future mayoral campaign or donated to gain influence in some way with another candidate. Justus probably has a chance to win but her odds just took a dive with Kander. This will be a fight between an East side candidate and the west side of the city. I’m afraid both will be talking about limiting TIF financing as that seems to play well on the East Side and Northland. I’d guess that’s why Justus voted against 3 Light.

Pretty bummed about Jolie backing out, but she says she'll be running for city council again, so that appeases me. Is Kander a shoe-in or does anyone else (Lucas?) stand a chance?
