Kansas City Metro Latino/Hispanic Population

Post by NorthOak »

Why is KC's Hispanic population numbers deliberately estimated so low?
Charlotte, Salt Lake City, and Providence Rhode Island have more Latinos than KC?
KC has only 23,000 more Hispanics than Milwaukee?

Charlotte-Concord-Gastonia, NC-SC 227,000
Salt Lake City, UT 206,000
Providence-Warwick, RI-MA 186,000
Kansas City, MO-KS 183,000
Detroit-Warren-Dearborn, MI 178,000
Bridgeport-Stamford-Norwalk, CT 177,000
Hartford-West Hartford-East Hartford, CT 169,000
Oklahoma City, OK 167,000
Milwaukee-Waukesha-West Allis, WI 160,000
Notice these are all estimates as the numbers are rounded. I don't believe any of this. There is a conspiracy of some sort going on.
Perhaps it has something to do with the Hispanic community here not wanting to participate in the census or pop studies?
Look at the "foreign born" numbers - there is no way the foreign born Hispanics in KC are only half of those born in the US.
That says there are only 64,000 foreign born Hispanics in all of the KC metro! That's insane!
There are at least 20,000 foreign born Hispanics just in Independence MO!
There are easily 100,000 foreign born Hispanics in KCMO and KCK.
Now add foreign born in Jackson, Johnson, Cass, Clay, Platte, Wyandotte and other counties.
There has to be at least 200,000 foreign born in the entire metro.
The study says "US born" are twice as many as foreign, so do the math.

Census says only 197k Hispanics in a 22 county area.

You're talking about tens of thousands of unreported people just in KCMO. That's a non-trivial number. It's hard to hide that many people from every other source of data like utility use, school attendance, health services, groceries purchased, etc

2014 all Hispanics as percent of each county
Atchison KS 16,513 479 3%
Doniphan KS 7,874 220 3%
Douglas KS 116,585 6,767 6%
Franklin KS 25,611 1,006 4%
Johnson KS 574,272 42,592 7%
Leavenworth KS 78,797 5,420 7%
Linn KS 9,502 223 2%
Miami KS 32,822 1,015 3%
Wyandotte KS 161,636 44,075 27%
Andrew MO 17,379 374 2%
Bates MO 16,584 366 2%
Buchanan MO 89,486 5,398 6%
Caldwell MO 9,034 180 2%
Cass MO 100,889 4,296 4%
Clay MO 233,682 15,430 7%
Clinton MO 20,299 420 2%
DeKalb MO 12,692 255 2%
Jackson MO 683,191 60,005 9%
Johnson MO 54,362 2,181 4%
Lafayette MO 32,688 841 3%
Platte MO 94,788 5,373 6%
Ray MO 22,949 534 2%
2,411,635 197,450 8%

Are you saying that this conspiracy is that large so as to hide the bills of 10% of the metro area?

No it's not hard to hide using those sources.
Most foreign born Hispanics rent, have large households including extended families.
The only valid source I see in your post that should even be used is school enrollment.
Everything else is a joke , you can't ascertain real numbers trying to guess from utility and grocery use.

All of Jackson County MO only has 60+K Hispanics according to the last census? That is a total joke.
There are more than that just within the city limits of KCMO.

Have seen 10% Latino stats over the years so for the 2.1M metro would expect it to be well over 200K. There are also 'two or more races' and 'other race' stats of which many are Latino. KC showed 4.5% 'some other race' in 2010, which I recall reports saying most of those in KC are Latino.

So how do you quantify a real number if you say that's wrong?

You could be right, now prove it.

Multi-race doesn't mean someone identifies as Latino. Someone who has Black and Latino parents might self identify as black unless they fill out a form that has mixed race as an option.

There's going to be a non-trivial number of people in this grouping.

Am not making any claims, just stating that over 200K Latino would fit the general 10% pattern KC has had. Just what I'd 'expect', not saying it is the case. And there were reports after 2010 census that in KCs case, 'other race' and 'more than 1' tended to be more Latino than any other.

Sure, but "over 200k" could mean a few thousand but not likely 50-100,000 not counted, which is what's needed to make the numbers in the OP work.

The OP Independence guess would mean only 1/5 of foreign born has been counted in that town. That would be a huge disparity. KC and KCK would be missing over half of individuals foreign born.

The Kansas City metro has had a large number of Hispanics for decades, and generations, now, mostly from Mexico but also from Cuba. Maybe it might have to do with KC being the starting point of the Santa Fe Trail. Can't back it up but I would safely assume that many locals of Hispanic heritage were born in the USA. The Westside had a large Hispanic population back in the 60's. And in the 70's for a few years I played softball in a league with a couple of teams that were mostly Hispanic and they and parents were not foreign born (and let's not discount the mixed marriages).

Via the MLS thread was looking at largest Latino populations. Found this from 2014. KC only 44th but high for Midwest (given SW proximity of course and I-35 path to MX). Other sources imply over 200K for metro area, which might be including 'other' or '2 or more races' or illegals. Notice that upper E Coast cities tend to be more Puerto Rican.

http://www.pewhispanic.org/interactives ... tan-areas/

For KC it says...
Mexican: 75.4
Puerto Rican: 3.7
Honduran: 3.6

I've heard that KCK was growing with more Guatemalan, especially Central Ave but may not be the case. Perhaps in recent immigration.
