General questions about Sanborn maps of KC

Post by Chiro75 »

First of all, this forum has been INCREDIBLY helpful on my research for a project/paper I'm working on.

Concerning the Sanborn maps (which I found interesting general info about), the ones for KC have a wide range of dates sometimes. For example, if I'm looking at the building that occupied 436 Prospect for a long time, I find it on all the Sanborn maps extending into the 1950's. If the last Sanborn map is dated "1940-1957" or something like that (I could have my numbers wrong, but I know it's a big spread of years), is there any way to know REALLY when that property may have been bulldozed?

In other words, if the house that occupied 436 Prospect was on the "1940-1957" map, I'm assuming I can only REALLY reasonably assume that in 1940, that structure was still there, but it could've been torn down in 1943 or something, depending on when that particular part of the city was added to the map, no?

Or am I looking at these things the wrong way?
