Yeah, I've been posting about this over on the tech/startups thread.

This could be a big deal or mean nothing. The downtown KC project is Cisco's largest Internet of Things project in US and they are the one taking the risk so this is a good deal for KC either way. Internet of Things (Cisco calls it Internet of Everything) is expected to be The Next Big Thing since smartphones. If Cisco succeeds and it becomes a model for future IoT for public/civic use, this could be big for KC. They are basically using downtown KC as a living lab. Pretty cool, but still too early to tell what the impact will be.

Cisco has been losing market share with their traditional biz and they are putting a lot of their eggs in IoT research basket. They need this to succeed and will then want to expand it - to other cities as well as maybe more research for other new services in KC.

of course that's only 13 of 25 in phase 1. that means a LOT of property owner conversations.

No, silly - kiosks like at the mall so you can by calendars or Dippin' Dots while waiting

they look like this, but this is NYC's implementation which reused old phone booths (KC's will be freestanding kiosks):

Would you like tickets to the Manheim Steamroller performance in the Sprint Center at 8:00pm today?

Chipotle around the corner will give you 10% off a veggie burrito if you say 'streetcar' while placing your order.

Also, Jos. A. Bank will sell you two pairs of slacks for the price of one. The ones you're wearing look a little tight....."

It's much more than that. There will be many sensors around downtown that will feed info to the kiosks and likely to a companion smartphone app. The 'smart' part is assessing real time info from sensors and other input then giving meaningful consolidated info about the moment either via kiosks or smartphones. At least conceptually that's the idea, I'm not familiar with what Cisco is planing specifically for downtown KC, but they say it is their largest project in US - I think they mean in terms of the range of sensors they plan to use.

But Mr Kiosk, what about my Dippin' Dots? ... And my pants only look tight because of the veggie burrito in my pocket, I swear.

Honestly, I am very confused.

autonomous cars/taxis and the rise of uber/lyft/sidecar should reduce/eliminate the need for massive parking structures. they're such wastes of precious resources already and never make money unless the market truly sets the price of parking (like roadways, those costs are almost always hidden and subsidized).

Short article about whether the "smart city" projects will be worth the investment. Good pub for the city.
