Cisco needs somewhere on the continent to show off the system.pash wrote:Details are still rather scant, but the city is getting better than three dollars from Cisco and its partners for each public dollar invested, so there's that.
It's doubtless a demo/sandbox for them just as much as providing the system to KC

Re: Smart City Project
Cisco says they are delivering the foundation for a 'living lab', apparently not any unique application yet other than basic info to start with. The objective seems to be to collect/centralize lots of data points from city infrastructure sensors (utilities - even water/sewer, garages, traffic, bus/streetcar, etc) cross reference with things like weather, accidents/incidents, police/fire/ambulance calls and then allow app developers to data mine everything to create useful/relevant/context aware info - like various dashboard views that target visitors, residents and city maintenance/operators separately on either kiosks, smartphones or city ops center. Think Google Now but with city data and sensors. There could be various dashboards that target different audiences. I could see the DT CID bumble bee cleanup crew also input real time info about the surroundings with a cheap tablet. Downtowners themselves can be data points if they opt in to be tracked, but will be tricky privacy wise. Looks like they hope to attract muni developers and city operators to create apps and use KC as a test lab before rolling out solutions elsewhere.
Hope to see Cisco commit long term and maintain KC as their largest muni Internet of Things (IoT) project in US. Sprint is also now rumored to be in on this, to provide free WiFi in the same footprint as this project. And there's speculation of Google Project Fi (new Google Wireless service) getting involved with Sprint on this. KC also may be second city to get a new pCell wireless network that could tie into this.
Could be exciting stuff that KC is forging or could totally dud out, too early to tell. Cisco needs this to work given they expect IoT to be their future growth as their other biz units lose market share, so hopefully we'll see them put major effort into this.

Re: Smart City Project
Cisco has described more detail about this project...
- a Wi-Fi network constructed, managed and owned by Sprint Corp.
- an "Enterprise Mobility Services Platform to enhance the resident and visitor experience over a mobile app"
- a Living Lab development data portal managed by Kansas City-based start-up incubator Think Big Partners LLC
-"smart lighting" and "video as sensors" in collaboration with Oakland-based LED lighting company Sensity Systems
- CityPost interactive digital kiosks and "mobile citizen engagement"
- future work on "smart water innovative solutions" with Overland Park-based Black & Veatch
- "identifying technologies for next-generation police cruisers"
The link describes some details...

Re: Smart City Project
This is the real opportunity for KC. Not just to be a trial for SmartCity infrastructure and Internet of Things (IoT) devices/sensors, but even better... companies interested in participating in KC's 'living lab', opening a branch office if not moving to KC.pash wrote: In related news, Smart City Media, the company that makes the kiosks that are going in at each streetcar stop, will open a local office as part of their involvement in the project. (Their present office is in NYC.)
KC's SmartCity promoters need to hype up (realistic, meaningful hype) to the growing industry - with hopefully help from Cisco - that KC is 'the place to be' to experiment with public IoT ideas and infrastructure. KC region has done a good job promoting it is the global center of the Animal Health industry (resulting in many companies moving to/opening offices in area) and this is another opportunity. KC hasn't really capitalized on Google Fiber as much as it could have (yet), this might have more legs to it if the industry can be convinced KC is a viable lab to test their IoT ideas/products.
It also may be crucial for UMKC/Mizzou/Rolla and KU/K-State to develop related research programs for this to succeed. KC region's animal health industry likely wouldn't be what it is w/out the regional universities involved.

that one was pro bono. no one would have paid for it.flyingember wrote:hopefully the app is better than the streetcar one.

Re: Smart City Project
KC will need to be careful to allow only sensors and 'read only' access to data and not allow 'control' of infrastructure like turning on/off streetlights, water, traffic lights, etc. It may be obvious they shouldn't allow it but over time it could be easy to cross that line and add devices that have some form of control under the false pretense it is 'secured'. Would just make it a hackers/terrorists dream, one stop shop to Live Free/Die Hard - and SkyNet when the Internet collective becomes self aware - Mwahahaha.

That explains a lot.DaveKCMO wrote:that one was pro bono. no one would have paid for it.flyingember wrote:hopefully the app is better than the streetcar one.
my favorite part is a with the goal to mitigate the construction messing with access it didn't encourage using the bus by letting people check in at the major bus stops. Always thought that was interesting given this is a public transit project.

You, perhaps unintentionally, just described the entire gimmick behind last year's mediocre Watch Dogs.earthling wrote:KC will need to be careful to allow only sensors and 'read only' access to data and not allow 'control' of infrastructure like turning on/off streetlights, water, traffic lights, etc.

Re: Smart City Project
This explains a tidbit more about one aspect of the project...
http://www.policychargingcontrol.com/te ... y-iot-wifi
http://www.policychargingcontrol.com/te ... y-iot-wifi
The Wi-Fi network works with sensors powered by Sensity, one of the companies collaborating with Cisco on this project. The Wi-Fi network and sensors rolled out across 93,000 street lights in the city would allow each lighting fixture to be transformed into a sensory node in a powerful, broadband wireless network, creating a Light Sensory Network for municipalities. The joint solution is designed to convert city lighting infrastructure into a distributed sensing platform to collect real-time data for smart city applications, such as smart parking, lighting, retail analytics, and public safety and security.

Re: Smart City Project
http://www.thenational.ae/business/econ ... ustainablyCan you name one city in the emerging and developed worlds that has excelled in terms of smart city innovation?
Each city brings a unique combination of qualities and requires a tailored approach to getting smart, so it’s difficult to pick just one. In Europe, Barcelona and Hamburg are distinguishing themselves with groundbreaking approaches to becoming more efficient while simultaneously preserving the distinctive characteristics of each city. In the US, Kansas City is bringing together a consortium of powerful partners to work on a whole new arsenal of solutions to the city’s challenges. In Asia and the Middle East, Dubai, Bangalore and Adelaide are making dramatic shifts in how they operate and deliver services to their citizens. It’s a very hard request to pick only one … But perhaps because the US has been a bit slow in adopting smart city approaches compared to other parts of the world, then Kansas City, our newest “lighthouse city”, would be that city.
Re: Smart City Project
I swear this was brought up on this forum previously, but I can't find it for the life of me.
