Six months from signups to installation in Lee's Summit.

their map shows the qualified areas as under construction still. you got lucky.

my neighborhood has people hooked up while they run new conduit and I still haven't seen any work begun. it's that varied within a 3 minute drive

the original goal was hookup by December 2014.
the current deadline is by the end of November 2015.

So there's plenty of cases they're a year behind.

the sad thing is their excuse, that they have to figure out how to run the cable. wouldn't a survey and to know how to run the actual fiber be a key step when designing where to put major boxes?
Of course the above might be true but the real reason that isn't being done is the priority of your neighborhood. Talked recently with someone involved with Google in another city and Google seems to be finishing out neighborhoods with the higher percentage of signups first. So how does your neighborhood compare to others?

I thought that was always the point of the rallies - to prioritize the fiberhoods within a region.

They didn't actually announce this was the case. It makes sense though.

The goal of the rallies is to determine what areas get service period.
KCMO central has general open sign ups and the places that didn't make it back during the two rallies still can't get service.

Just an update on "West Johnson County": with about 3 weeks left for signups, all but 6 fiberhoods have qualified.

Slight tangent. Google Fiber has expanded and leased office space at 908 Broadway downtown, a small 6 story building. I wonder if they'll also have GF retail lounge at ground level.

Their TV service is so stagnate that it's getting kind of depressing. Channels are hardly introduced anymore, no new app updates, still can't set up anything out of house. They only seem to answer any questions days after the matter and even then, it isn't truly answered outside of the WS system outage. We've talked about going back to TWC for TV only, but that'd be a pain just getting everything switched again.

The internet though is still superb.

I don't think Google has enough subscriber base to negotiate good deals with channels they couldn't get agreements with. They may not be able to add more until getting a much larger base expanding into other cities.

TWC has its place since they have more channels, now offer up to 300M (though only 20 up) and offers a mid-tier speed, which Google doesn't.

Just curious, anyone in NKC have LiNKCity Gigabit Internet? It's 'free' Gigabit to all residents, outside $300 install fee and commercial/casino taxes helping to pay for it.

Just a note that West Johnson County signups end tomorrow. Currently all the fiberhoods have qualified except one (Cedar Lake, which is 12 short).

Also in Monday night's Overland Park City Council meeting, the city approved the 4 fiber hut locations that will service the city.

Looks like Google might be testing in KC a new type of wireless using 3.5Ghz. This is good and bad if planning as alternative to last mile for fiber. Good in that they can get deployed in hard to reach places but would not be as good for those who get wireless vs those who get real fiber to the home given wireless not as reliable and likely has worse latency. But is another option that could have good use cases and is nice to see Google continues to use KC as a test market. I could see this used for the 'free' Gigabit in HUD housing that has been announced as well as public places.

http://www.businessinsider.com/google-e ... ity-2016-2

edit: Just noticed they also may use for 'end user' devices as well, implying it could compete with traditional wireless carriers. That doesn't sound realistic using 3.5Ghz band as the coverage would not be very good, especially indoors.

Wireless may be less reliable in its ongoing usage, but it would be less likely to go down for a long period of time. I've had outages before with my GF that lasted multiple days because they had to send people out to diagnose every neighborhood. So, when a wind or ice storm comes through and downs power lines, those with the wireless connection could realistically still have Internet if their receiver has backup power. This would also be a great selling point if they let those with existing fiber connections upgrade to a modem that switches to wireless when the incoming wired connection goes down. They have long been rumored to offer a city-wide WAN service to customers as well. I'd imagine there could be a common SSID broadcast from these towers that GF customers could use to login from anywhere in range.

Would be nice to have both options, though I'd rather have fiber for the lower latency (and I have underground fiber). There can be many uses for this but I'd be concerned if they decide to stop or reduce last mile fiber rollout using this instead in the future.
