Brad Feld: My New FiberHouse in Kansas City
I have a couple of very specific goals. First, I want to set an example using some of the principles I talk about in Startup Communities: Building an Entrepreneurial Ecosystem in Your City. Next, I’m fascinated with Google Fiber and the idea of 1GB Internet access to the home so I want to experiment and see what smart entrepreneurs can come up with. I have a long relationship with Kauffman and Kansas City going back to the mid-1990′s and I want to support the development and growth of the Kansas City startup community. And finally, when Amy and I talked about the idea of it, we agreed it would be a fun thing to do.

^I wonder if this could spin into a reality TV show. As silly as that might be, it also might be a huge boost to the momentum...

Visited the Startup Village during the Startup Crawl last week. It's pretty much just a bunch of dudes living in a house together coding away.

Big Kansas City 2013
Big Kansas City joins Big Omaha and Big Des Moines to make up The Big Series, the nation's most ambitious events on innovation and entrepreneurship. In the weeks to come, we'll share more details about the two-and-a-half-day conference, reveal more than a dozen notable entrepreneurs and innovators as speakers and introduce some of the 400 attendees who will share in the experiences with us.

In the meantime, here's a sneak peek at our new branding, our conference home and the overview of the full schedule. Please note, tickets go on sale Jan. 23.

Phone2Action calls in win at SXSW Accelerator
Turns out Kansas City, Mo.-based Phone2Action truly was dialed in at the South by Southwest Interactive Accelerator on Tuesday. The mobile advocacy startup outdueled seven early-stage companies to win the News Technologies category after two rounds of presentations.

Co-founders Jeb Ory and Ximena Hartsock will head home with $4,000, two tickets to next year's SXSW Interactive, free web hosting for a year, an Apple TV and more, but they know the biggest benefits are yet to come.

The "Startups: Made in Kansas City" series on KCPT is pretty good. Caught an episode last night. A fellow forum member makes an appearance.

KC metro ranked 64th in world for patents in 2012 - used to be ranked much lower and is apparently rising fast, passing up STL for first time in 2011.
Since the recession, patent growth has been very strong in Kansas City," said Jonathan Rothwell, lead author of a Brookings study last month on patents in metropolitan areas. "There's a huge spike. ... A big part of that seems to be Sprint."
...
One measure Brookings made compared a metropolitan area's patent production to its working population. For decades, the Kansas City area's rank among metro areas had bounced around in unenviable territory, between 174 and 244. No more. The area made the top 100 in 2011 and surged to 64 last year thanks to growth in patents.

KC ranked 31st in US in 2011 so apparently is higher than that in 2012. Can't find the actual 2012 list, only 2011. KC metro ranked 8th for telcom patents in 2011 so maybe higher in 2012 since they mention growth with Sprint.
