Cisco selects KC for a "Smart City" project, specifically downtown...

http://www.bizjournals.com/kansascity/n ... l?page=all
James said Kansas City soon will launch pilot tests to build smart lighting, interactive digital kiosks, high-definition security video and other high-tech solutions to help residents in Downtown.

"This is going to give our entrepreneurs a chance to build their own unique, innovative application to enhance the public experience and even solve some deep-rooted city-related problems." he said. "Kansas City is going to be a beta for entrepreneurs all across the world to test applications and technology. It gives entrepreneurs the ability to scale up quickly in a cost-efficient manner by giving them a living, breathing client — that being the city of Kansas City, Missouri — to test their ideas."

Troy Schulte, city manager of Kansas City, said in a question-and-answer with Cisco officials that he thinks the smart city model can be used as part of Kansas City's coming streetcar. For example, he said, sensors along the streetcar's 2.2-mile first phase could notify operators of a track issue or police of a car parked on the track.

An "Unconference"? Nonsensical marketing is a huge turn off.

pash wrote:"Unconference" is a silly but meaningful term. It refers to a new-fangled sort of conference with lots of group discussions and informal talks in which the audience and speakers interact a lot more than at a typical conference.
Un is a prefix that means not. So I guess they are not having a conference. So I shouldn't feel bad for not missing it.

KC hits PC World top 10 tech cities to call home...
http://www.pcmag.com/slideshow/story/32 ... all-home/1

They attribute Google Fiber but don't mention or realize KC area has more tech/telcom employment than Austin and Portland. And Cicso announcement not mentioned - Internet of Things is the next expected major tech wave and KC will be a major part of Cisco's research.

KC attracts US HQ from another Australian animal health company. They'll be located in American Century building off the Plaza.

http://www.bizjournals.com/kansascity/n ... rters.html
"Kansas City is the obvious best location to launch Jurox's U.S. operations," Jurox Managing Director John O'Brien said. "Missouri offers a broad portfolio of animal health companies, a first-rate talent pool and a superior transportation network that connects us to clientele around the country and globe. Kansas City's reputation and resources in animal sciences provides advantages you can't find elsewhere."
They might be in for a big surprise on 'a superior transportation network' unless they meant to say telcom infrastructure or maybe freight. But another good score.

KC's white collar jobs, especially sci/tech services jobs have been continuing to do pretty well, slightly higher than but not same growth as Austin so Austin likely to pass up. BLS generates reports with different scales, I don't have control of that - note the values, not the graphs.

KC Metro Sci/Tech Services employment Aug 2010-2014 - 82K, about 13K adds since 2010
Image

STL Metro - Sci/Tech - 76K, about 4K adds since 2010 (even though STL metro 30% larger)
Image

Austin Metro - Sci/Tech - 81K, over 20K adds since 2010 (next for Google Fiber)
Image

Portland Metro - Sci/Tech - nearly 65K, about 11K added since 2010 (possibly next for Google Fiber)
Image

KC Info/Telcom Services Employment Aug 2010-2014 - taking a hit with Sprint, but Web services also included here...
Image

STL - Info/Telcom

Austin - Info/Telcom

Portland - Info/Tecom

Cerner should give a bigger boost once they get their new HQ kicking into gear, 15K adds over next few year alone. Sprint will dump some in short term but could boost again if they can turn around. Hard to say what will come of Cisco's Internet of Things project Downtown - Cisco is losing ground with their trad biz and they are putting all eggs in IoT basket, which could be great for KC or end up meaning nothing - but Cisco is the one taking the risk.

edit: Source - click on state/metro then Pro/Biz Services, then Pro/Sci/Tech services...

Good comprehensive article of what's going on in KC since Google Fiber arrived....
http://www.computerworld.com/article/26 ... iness.html

Although methinks Michael Liimatta is consistently exploiting outside media to support his org that has lost funding (page 2). He doesn't really tell the whole story, just the bits and pieces that promote his org.

Google experimenting with telemedicine. I wonder if KU Med or Cerner are involved. When Google Fiber had initial contest and announced KC, they pointed out a KU Med/Cerner proposal on using Google Fiber for telemedicine...

Edit: After a quick search, there does seem to be some form of connection with Google Helpouts and Cerner...

Oakland CA Solar company opening downtown KC office starting with about 50 jobs, to eventually add nearly 600 jobs, including design engineering...
http://www.bizjournals.com/kansascity/n ... l?page=all

KC Star says it's a national office and that KC won out over 50 cities considered...
http://www.kansascity.com/news/business ... 25975.html

Curious they make the selection just days after Google Fiber announces small/med biz class Gigabit service in KC for only $100. Hopefully we'll see more SMBs and startups moving into KC. The Star article says KC drew 4 SF Bay Area companies to KC within last year.
