I had an idea a bit ago to use the geography of the region in the flag, showing the confluence of the Kansas and Missouri rivers. My basic draft is just an MS Paint version of a flag with a Google Maps trace over the rivers, though the initial colors I used are a bit too much like the scuba flag.

Too close to StL's (which ironically, looks more like the Kaw/MO confluence than the MO/Mississippi).

Wow. That is creepy. It does not look familiar to me, but I wouldn't be shocked if that was lurking in my conscience somewhere. I was going for more of a Monarchs hat look, but even the color scheme ended up similar.

Was perusing the NAVA website. Kansas City is one of the "case studies" the list. The Star ran a contest to replace the offest tri-color.

The resultant change was the tri-color we have now, and apparently the powers that be ignored the "no text" rule. It is unclear if that design was submitted in the contest, though I suspect not. Anyway, some of the top 20 from that contest are fucking awesome:

I am particularly partial to #s 9, 4, and 18, in that order.

Dear lord, #4 is outstanding, with #12 a close second in my book.

Wow. 4, 5, 6, 12, 17, 18 would all be great.

The document references a Star contest. Does anyone remember the results of that?

I wonder if Sly James know this document exists. It seems like the kind of thing he'd go for.

Wichita's is the stone shit. I think everybody recognizes Wichita's flag as one of the probably top 10 city flags.

Des Moines is bridges, right? Maybe you were joking.

The most popular flags tend to be flags with simple designs with no more than 3 or 4 colors. This is why the Wichita flag stands out.

I realize this is a thread about the KC flag, but perhaps it is time for our resident vexillologists to turn their attention to a larger purpose. Imagine if Missouri could have a flag as recognizable and iconic as Colorado, California, New Mexico, or Texas.

House Committee considering creating commission to study whether we need a new flag: http://www.kansascity.com/2014/02/05/47 ... -flag.html

I'm a native Kansan, so the flag means more to me, but I've always thought the Kansas flag was quite nice and that the Missouri flag was quite forgettable. The Missouri flag is two bears high-fiving on top of the Paraguay/Netherlands flag.
