Jan 2012 metro employment comparisons over last 10 years

Post by earthling »

January employment numbers are out, considered the most accurate month by the BLS and it tends to show the most stable non-seasonable jobs. The BLS has two methods to track employment. This is the method reported by employers (not workers), does not include self-employed or farm workers.

KC seems to be recovering OK compared to most other cities, better than avg for Midwest too. KC has a way to go to catchup to 2008 level but many cities are actually below 10 years ago. No surprise Texas and DC are the hottest areas.

Yeah, relative to 2 years ago they've added a decent amount jobs, but they didn't really have the boom before the bust. Compare to 10 years ago... Pitt overall growth is about same as KC over 10 years.

Is surprising how many cities are still below job count 10 years ago. LA, SF are almost as bad off as Detroit and Cleveland. Chicago and STL not so hot either, but at least lately digging out of hole. KC's pattern is more similar to NYC and Atlanta.
