Yael: KC needs to nurture young leaders

Post by KCMax »

WILL IT BE YOU?

As KC ages, need to nurture potential young leaders grows
But big questions loom:

• How do you make sure the 20-somethings with potential turn into the 30- and 40-somethings with real power to lead this community?

• How do you get them involved in all kinds of activities and feed off their energy in creating a more vibrant future for the entire region?

• How do you keep them in Kansas City when Seattle, Austin, Washington, D.C., and other attractive cities beckon?

KC is attracting young educated already from the outside. Cerner alone is bringing them in by the thousands from all over country. There's a stat posted somewhere here that shows KC attracts quite a few young educated - not as high as 'hot' cities but more than you'd expect.

I would expect a fair % to leave KC for hotter cities or if they have better opportunities elsewhere but KC seems to be doing OK keeping a good many.

I think KC is doing a decent job keeping/attracting its educated - but will they be civic-minded leaders? Will the next generation be engaged in their communities or is there a disengagement among younger people in KC. Frankly, I'm pretty impressed with the younger generation and I think they may be more engaged than young people 10-15 years ago. On this forum alone you can find people actively engaged in leadership roles in this metro.

Oh, how do you keep them down on the farm once they've seen gay Paree?

This.
I know a good chunk of guys my age who either are moving to KC after graduation, are considering moving, or consider the city an attractive repeat destination. However, those who do move there, especially the ones that move to the urban core have been fairly disengaged from going-ons of the city; what concerns them is at the entertainment/food/drink side of things.
However, that in itself is not an entirely bad thing as the places that they frequent will tend to be local establishments which will benefit from their patronage, and as more move in, there would probably be a push on all sides to improve the communities to accommodate them. Then as they get older and their priorities shift, yet that they have a different outlook on the urban community than there parental predecessors, there is potential hope that they themselves will get involved to improve the setting that they are in.

How about Yael replaces himself with someone younger at the Star? He embodies the worst about KC.

Yea, like any young person would take a job at a dying industry like a newspaper.

Completely agree. Yael is the kind of guy that sees storm clouds in a sunny day. Birthdays for him are not a celebration of life but a coutdown towards death. He is without a doubt the most pessimistic voice in a town that already has an inferiority complex.
