That event needs space above anything else. All the best to them.

This is one event I never understood and never got behind. Didn't they have some kind of parade downtown, I think it was even broadcast on KMBC?

I'm really suprised RockFest hasn't moved to KS Speedway or somewhere with wide open spaces and free parking, seems to be the only annual event actually held in the City.

The event lost its soul when it left the Bottoms.

the parade was moved to the stadium last year too

?-2014 animals parade through downtown and bbq is cooked within walking distance of the historic stockyards site
2015 animals parade around royals stadium and bbq is cooked near the same sports stadiums
2016 animals parade ??? and bbq is cooked inside a race track.

A sad state of affairs.

Rockfest is actually taking advantage of the streetcar. their parking map doesn't go south of the park. It's bigger than streetcar opening weekend, all in one day.

The announcement will be made during a 7 p.m. public hearing on the floor of the 42-year-old arena. The hearing will be preceded by a 6 p.m. tour of Kemper that will be open to the public. Those wishing to participate should park in the arena’s north parking lot and enter through the administrative entrance, which can be located by looking for the blue awning over it.

big love fest last night:

10 year LCRA tax abatement, historic tax credits needed, property must to be rezoned to UR and platted (apparently this has never happened? lolwut?), transfer to foutch by 3Q16.

The parcel viewer shows the Kemper area as one big plot of land. Perhaps they're parceling out the arena and properties associated with this project and leaving others alone?

ah, yes, that explains it. they showed a slide indicating the 10 acres to be transferred only includes the arena and the front parking lot.

so, more accurately: kemper arena has never been platted as a standalone parcel.

Huh?

It started at the beginning of September. It's not one event but a series of events across three months. That's part of it's problem.

The State Fair is held over 11 days for comparison. Same type of events, way more attendance.

They are still trying to prove they can make it just as good or better without the Kemper location. I really hope they come to their senses and bring it back to Kemper in one of the first weeks of October. The event and atmosphere were already great, but they never quite figured out how to make it accessible to outsiders who didn't have a connection to a specific party. There is even less incentive to go out to the speedway for me because I was primarily interested in the event for the atmosphere. Now, it is just a really big version of every other BBQ competition, but somewhere I have to drive that is really far away from most of the city.

Why don't they put it in the North Loop? Plenty of space.

You have to be joking.

They currently have space roughly equal to 6th to 12th, Grand to Baltimore. That's 18 square blocks at a minimum.

Add on the land acquisition cost and their incentives demand would increase dramatically. A single building downtown just sold for $5.7 million. The land purchase could be more than the cost of the buildings.
