haha, that's awesome! At least until the next Chilean earthquake knocks the earth just so much off its axis!

Actually, I had it wrong. That's not the edge of totality cutting across downtown, it's the edge at which the eclipse is visible. Totality is a very narrow band that crosses up around St. Joe. But, close enough.
Re: Total Eclipse, 8/21/17
Actually I think you had it right the first time. The path of totality would be a few dozen miles wide rather than a single line, the eclipse is visible as a partial eclipse for a much greater distance beyond that.
Every time I debate whether to move, I need to remember this event. My current home is 2 blocks inside the total eclipse zone.

I was on the island of Hawaii for a total eclipse. It was incredible. This will bring a lot of people to KC.

You would think that KC would start to cash in on this event or start pumping it up? It would be cool if somehow the City could have some kind of FAA/TSA safe viewing party on a piece of land at the airport. Riverfront Park should be another decent viewing spot.

KC won't be a popuar spot, the airport will have roughly half the length of St. Joseph.
But what it could do well is to be involved with transport to north of the city
I'm planning to go see it somewhere rural like NE of Excelsior Springs or Plattsburg. Don't have to decide yet.

I agree, that among eclipse nerds, KC will not be a destination. But for more passively aware folks who don't want to travel to the boonies and would rather have a party, KC will do just fine. John's Big Deck will be packed, I'm sure.

Looking at the path, there are only a few largish cities near the path. Portland is largest but is at risk of a cloud day.

Re: Total Eclipse, 8/21/17
I'm confused, looking at interactive maps part of Kansas City is right in the full eclipse path so why wouldn't it be ideal? Is it because the duration of the eclipse or something else I am missing? Driving 50 minutes to see the eclipse an 50 extra seconds seems like a downright waste of time.

You want to be in the center of the totality.

it's also classic opportunity cost. For someone interested going 50 minutes further is the best chance for a century for KC residents to see an eclipse.grovester wrote:You want to be in the center of the totality.

Skip this one and you're waiting 7 years and driving to Poplar Bluff. Skip both and the next one even close geographically is in 2045.
Sure, plenty of people won't go, but I expect KC, St Louis and Columbia hotels and everything in between will be filled up for that weekend.
