Is there a firm that has the job of promoting Kansas City? Seriously.
Or, is this a somewhat organic emergence of world awareness?

Out of 100 cities, KC at #42 and St. Louis at #58 are "middle of the pack." I think that shows diversity.

Re: Rankings, lists, and such
Anyone have good information about the percentage of the population that attends a church service during a typical week. I.e. Average total weekly Attendance / total population?
Just curious.

Since this could quickly turn into religion discussion, I've posted in the religion thread...
http://kcrag.com/viewtopic.php?p=526054#p526054
It's a US poll but KC is likely US avg as other stats point to. The overall trend is that 'very religious' is steady yet there is rise in non/not very religious over last 20 years. So the somewhat religious are shrinking and heading towards non-religious.

KC comes in top 15 for most literate cities, and improving from previous years. I think it lists cities, not metros..

As far as vague comparisons between cities go, here is an article describing KC from an artist's perspective:
http://badatsports.com/2014/its-a-kansa ... ay-part-1/
Mostly, Kansas City's significant gain is the number of young people staying here post-graduation.

Re: Rankings, lists, and such
It may become more difficult to keep/attract creative people in KC as KS and MO statewide politics become far more right. I suppose Austin and Atlanta have been able to grow that base in otherwise red states, but MO/KS seem to be leaning more one sided than TX/GA, or at least heading that way in public perception - maybe perception of KC too.

Any specific policies that factor into this perception?

I understand that bill is some kind of right-wing death rattle that'll be struck down anyhow?
Cheap rent, somewhat expensive night-life, one of these mythical 'cool jobs,' places to see and be seen by relevant parties- I thought those were the factors of attracting young people. These can exist here, in Lawrence, Austin, Greensboro- any red state oasis.

Re: Rankings, lists, and such
Even if later struck down, it's out there publicly as 'typical KS'. Most outsiders still think KS has pro-creation/anti-evolution in public schools even though it was later struck down - most don't know that happened. When traveling I often hear that brought up, years after it was reversed - and the assumption was KC as a whole were young earthers.
Can't think of specific policies that separate KS/MO from TX/GA (polices that support anti-gay, young earthers, excessive gun protection, promote a specific cultural tradition over promoting diversity) but as one who travels everywhere constantly, the perception of Austin and Atlanta is widely known that they don't mostly represent their state's far right side. Not sure public perception of KC is to that degree anymore. KC has had a very good track record attracting young educated and creative peoples from the outside but as far right policies keep popping up in the state, I wonder if that will continue to same degree. KC may need to pursue a public identity that is separate from KS/MO far right leaning politics as the larger cities in TX/GA have seemingly been able to do, at least more than KC/STL have.
Maybe I'm off base and this isn't the case at all, but as red states keep pushing for more far right policies, it will attract right leaning people to move there over left-leaning. Creative types may not specifically go to lefty places, but probably tend to avoid far right environments.
If this tangent goes any further, maybe mods should spin to another thread.

Re: Rankings, lists, and such
'Rankings, lists and such' might need a companion topic for the methodology of those quantities.
I think that Austin & Portland had an undefinable number of people visit, enjoy themselves, report to less enjoyable homes about their time, and therefore became attractive cities.

I realize that anecdotes do not equal data, and I only fly three or four times a year, but I have never heard this.brewcrew1000 wrote:A lot of the country thinks KC is in Kansas, 80% of the flight attendants say welcome to Kansas when they touchdown at KCI
