Mormon church to build temple in Kansas City area
I'm not sure, but this could be a pretty big deal to KC???
Any thoughts on where it might go?

Re: Mormon church to build temple in Kansas City area
Probably not Independence given the presence there of a rival organization. So what's the significance of a Temple, kind of like a mini-mecca? If it draws people to the area, that's great. If they build an iconic temple somewhere in the urban core, that's even better. They won't spend much money, however, at Raglan Road or the other bars in the P&L District.GRID wrote: I'm not sure, but this could be a pretty big deal to KC???

Seems like most of their temples are in fairly suburban locations. Where are the Mormons in the area? Eastern Jack? That could give a clue to the location they choose.

Something like that would be a nice addition to Downtown. For some reason, our downtown doesn't have a lot of high profile churchs like a lot of cities. It would give me something to photograph!
I think they will built it at 470 and Strother, east side of 470. That's my gut feeling. I think they own the land and they won't let it devlelop. The new interchange is at their front door.

There are lots of locations of significant historical/book of morman importance in Jackson and Clay counties - seems like they might want to tie it to one of those.
however, a cynic might well suspect that the mormon church isn't necessarily above declaring that some random site they own off the highway happens to be the true site of some such important locale.

An important locale like the Garden of Eden?LenexatoKCMO wrote: however, a cynic might well suspect that the mormon church isn't necessarily above declaring that some random site they own off the highway happens to be the true site of some such important locale.
A Kansas City-area temple should hold great significance for Mormons. In the 1830s church founder Joseph Smith led an early Mormon migration to Independence, Mo., and declared the area would be the center of Zion and the New Jerusalem. Now a Kansas City suburb, many Mormons also believe the area was the original site of the Garden of Eden.
Perhaps that's where Stevenson got the apple for his farm.

Kinda sucks. The one in Philly is going downtown. This would have been a nice addition to Downtown.

The good people of Liberty did off Mr. Smith the hospitality of their jail for a time.

To the Mormon Church, Independence is of significance in that it is said that that is where Jesus will come to build the New Jerusalem and set up his kingdom on Earth.
There is no fifth destination.

Scientologist and now Mormons?!? What's next, the church of Richard Simons? Surely, we aren't this gullible.
Re: Mormon church to build temple in Kansas City area
The LDS church owns vast areas of land in Clay county, but I am surprised it will not be in Independence since the LDS owns several historic sites there, the Mormon visitor center and since Jesus is supposed to make his end of times appearance there. It would have been interesting to have a religious edifice rival the the Community of Christ Jesus slide.
Re: Mormon church to build temple in Kansas City area
This will bring a lot of out of town visitors. And, no, the LDS Church hasn't declared the temple site to be some special plot of land with deeper meaning. Just a temple site to serve the regional LDS population.
As a mormon, I can tell you that if they started building temples in Independence, KC would see a huge population spike.

Had an aunt who died of cancer who told my dad on her death bed that she would never see him again because they would be on different levels of heaven because he wasn't Mormon and they would never see each other again. Also, none of the family could attend her wedding because only the 'holy' were allowed in the temple. Great religion!jmc wrote: This will bring a lot of out of town visitors.
