43% of people in KC not born in KS/MO?
43% of people in KC not born in KS/MO?
Percent of the Native Population Born in their State of Residence: 2006
Kansas City, MO-KS Metro Area 56.6 (43.4% not born in state)
Lawrence, KS Metro Area 57.0
St. Joseph, MO-KS Metro Area 71.6
United States 67.4
Chicago-Naperville-Joliet, IL-IN-WI Metro Area 76.3
Cincinnati-Middletown, OH-KY-IN Metro Area 71.2
Cleveland-Elyria-Mentor, OH Metro Area 79.1
Indianapolis-Carmel, IN Metro Area 72.0
St. Louis, MO-IL Metro Area 72.6
Milwaukee-Waukesha-West Allis, WI Metro Area 77.6
Minneapolis-St. Paul-Bloomington, MN-WI Metro Area 71.0
Denver-Aurora, CO Metro Area 48.8
It might count someone born in KCMO who moved to JoCo or vice versa. If the case, KC sure does move between state lines a great deal. But if I understand the methodology, those moves aren't counted. Cincy should be about same too. And look at Lawrence, it's like KC even though not on the border. Ditto for Denver. So does it make sense that 43% of KC people were not born in KS or MO? If I polled people at work, it's probably more than 50%.

Probably, because most Cincinnatians are probably born in Ohio and live in Ohio, whereas in Kansas City, where one of the largest Suburban areas is not in the same state as most of the city's hospitals, that would skew the data. I would imagine that they are counting the JoCo babies who are born in KCMO hospitals. Lawrence is a college town, and Denver is a boom town.

I've always heard 1/2 of people in KC Metro weren't born here.
I've also heard that 1/2 of all Americans live within 50 miles of their birthplace.
So the math makes sense to me here.

i wouldn't be surprised of half of the people on this forum weren't born in KS or MO
KC Region is all part of the same animal regardless of state and county lines.

Re: 43% of people in KC not born in KS/MO?
KC's consistent migration from outside the metro for many decades supports this. After I moved here from STL, STL seemed inbred in comparison to KC. Felt like most people in STL were from STL or Illisouri. KC was clearly different. The numbers are supporting it. Blue collar workforce would tend to be from the area. KC tends to be more white collar and service industry and has no major colleges, so the white collar workforce comes from elsewhere.

Lawrence/Manhattan are also curious as they have fewer state born residents than other college towns..
Lawrence, KS Metro Area 57.0 (43% not from KS)
Manhattan, KS Micro Area 51.9 (48% not from KS)
Columbia, MO Metro Area 65.5
Lincoln, NE Metro Area 73.1
Madison, WI Metro Area 71.5
Champaign-Urbana, IL Metro Area 73.9
Ann Arbor, MI Metro Area 67.5
If Lawrence/KU and Manhattan/K-State draw from other states (more than other college towns) and grads move to KC for work, that would also mean KC metro has more born from out of state.
But what this would also have to say is that since KC isn't as high growth as the south, a lot of people born in KC metro must be leaving the metro. But that the net difference is a positive in-migration.

In the case of Manhattan, Fort Riley probably plays a role in this too.ignatius wrote: KC's consistent migration from outside the metro for many decades supports this. The stats in first post don't include foreign born, just those born in the US but not state of residence. KC has about 6% foreign born.

Re: 43% of people in KC not born in KS/MO?
I'm not sure why these stats are relevant at all, for the confusion pointed out in the very first post. Also, I wasn't born in KS or MO, but I've lived in the Kansas City area on both sides for virtually my entire life, yet I'm lumped in with people that just moved here a few weeks ago. So does this stat tell us anything? It doesn't seem to.ignatius wrote: Percent of the Native Population Born in their State of Residence: 2006

Re: 43% of people in KC not born in KS/MO?
I think it might suggest the character of the metro population (i.e whether it's mostly homegrown, or whether it's receiving a lot of folks from outside the immediate area).
I wasn't born in KS/MO either, but i've lived most of my life in one state or the other

I'm usually surprised in Denver when I meet an actual native. I kind of consider myself a native since Denver was originally in the Kansas Territory and was named after a Kansas governor.phxcat wrote: Probably, because most Cincinnatians are probably born in Ohio and live in Ohio, whereas in Kansas City, where one of the largest Suburban areas is not in the same state as most of the city's hospitals, that would skew the data. yeah i find it hard to believe that 44% of metro KC is from states outside MO or KS, so i am guessing that the metro's unique state line divide is the explanation.

Re: 43% of people in KC not born in KS/MO?
Exactly - it just says that they weren't born in the state they live in - not that they weren't born in the state a couple blocks away and moved accross the border. Heck, I know lots of folks who's parents went to hospitals accross state lines for the birth. My sister lives in Lees Summit but has poped out both kids at a hospital in O.P.chrizow wrote: yeah i find it hard to believe that 44% of metro KC is from states outside MO or KS, so i am guessing that the metro's unique state line divide is the explanation.
I was born in rural NW MO.
