the KCPD is now compiling crime data per patrol division on its website.  the PD was sort of doing this before, but the new system is more organized and detailed.  the stats for march-may are up.

Crime decreases in KCMO in first half of 2014

Overall, violent and property crime down 12 percent.

Homicides down 32 percent.

Rapes down 25 percent.

Robberies down 10 percent.

Property crimes down 13 percent.

The number of homicides in KCMO in 2014 dropped to the lowest rate since 1972. The homicide rate in KCMO, 77 recorded, dropped 25 percent in one year. By contrast, KCMO had 126 murders in 2005.

In the past three years, the greatest reduction in homicides came in the East Patrol district. In 2011, 48 homicides were recorded in East Patrol. In 2014, the number recorded was 25.

Black-on-black crime accounted for about half of all homicides.

Across the state, the City of St. Louis, with a smaller population than KCMO, had 157 murders in 2014--more than twice as many as larger KCMO.

Stats reported by the Kansas City Star:

St. Louis had an alarming 49.9 homicides per 100,000 residents in 2014.

Kansas City’s rate of 16.5 murders per 100,000 people was much better.

It is encouraging to see improvement in the reduction of homicides in the City, as well as drops in most categories of crime. Will the dropping crime rate increase the number of people moving back into the central city?

KC celebrates sharp drop in homicides

An effort to target Kansas City's most violent offenders helped push down the city's homicide rate by nearly a quarter in 2014, The Kansas City Star reports.

The city's 77 homicides for the year was the lowest total since 1972. It also marked the first time in eight years that Kansas City has had fewer than 100 homicides in a year.

The Kansas City Police Department was sort of late to the game in employing the new type of policing that have drastically reduced crime in other major cities--especially the use of technology in identifying crime hot spots, and proactive community policing and engagement. It appears that the use of these techniques is starting to have an effect on local crime.

KC moved into the top ten among the fifty largest cities with the highest murder rates last year, and it will likely retain that distinction this year.

Wasn't that 2013? I couldn't find a compiled 2014 list. KC still needs work to get off the most violent list but some of the most violent cities aren't in top 50, including STL. I think KC came in around 20-25 in 2013 when including all cities, which is still not good. At least for 2014 KC comes in as one of most improved.

This says 2014 murders rose in LA, DC, Austin, Indy, Pittsburgh, Memphis and others...
