Re: Politics

You can die at work at any job, and it's a lot more likely to happen in plenty of other jobs than to cops. How much respect do you show to your garbage man? His job is much more dangerous than police work, and it's a more vital social service, too.

Re: Downtown Baseball Stadium

I can see the Royals dropping back down to the last few teams in attendance, but doing so that quickly was remarkable. Again, the team was still trying to figure out how to keep some of the players but attendance was dropping like a rock while they still had most of their WS team in tact. Rocks mus...

Re: Downtown Baseball Stadium

Ok, I’m sure attendance will rebound as soon as you explain to Royals fans that they simply don’t understand the business of baseball. People will be relieved to learn that the Royals actually have not been notoriously terrible for decades, that they have just been subject to the same vagaries of sm...

Re: Downtown Baseball Stadium

The Royals went to back to back world series. The fans barely noticed the team doing well in 2014 and didn't really start showing up till the last couple of weeks of that year. The team didn’t do well in 2014 until the last few weeks of the season. They were under .500 until late July. They were a ...

Re: Downtown Baseball Stadium

I don't know what the answer is. But right now, the Royals should not be paying any attention to what the fans say or want. They should not matter at all because they are not and have not been supporting the team well enough to have a say. I just hope moving the stadium downtown will be the one thi...

Re: Bike Lanes

What does any of that have to do with turning Brookside Blvd (or any other city street) into a traffic sewer?

Re: Bike Lanes

You seem to think that people don't want it, when actually, they've never had a choice. If enough wanted it, it would be there. Perhaps, you could say, "Not enough people know they want it.", but that just seems a bit pretentious. I ride the Gillham cycle track all the time. I never see p...

Re: Bike Lanes

Well sticking to the specific issue of Brookside first (though we are no longer in that thread), if frequent crashes are an issue at 51st St, I would have to say that mitigating that trumps any concerns about knock-on effects for businesses, especially businesses in farther away neighborhoods where ...

Re: UMKC projects

Yeah I get carried away by my hatred for cars in urban spaces. There is no quick fix for changing a city like KC (it took KC years to become the way it is and will take years to fix it), but to get away from the broad conversation about car culture in general and back to talking specifically about B...

Re: UMKC projects

Foot, bike and public transit will never be the quickest except in one condition….gridlock, and that’s only when there’s an off-street subway-type option. Even then, waiting for train, transferring once or twice and walking to your destination is almost always slower. The idea that you can jump in ...

Re: UMKC projects

The future should be fewer cars, so I'm not really sure why we would actively pursue a policy of increasing traffic. Hating traffic is basically the one thing everybody seems to agree on -- drivers hate being "stuck in" traffic (or more accurately, they hate being traffic themselves, thou...

Re: Downtown Baseball Stadium

Rolling roof conversation seems off base. Think of it as adding a 70,000 seat to the convention center. It goes beyond holding the Super Bowl. The cities with modern roofed stadiums regularly use them as convention center assets. Even St Louis's dilapidated stadium! If you're adding convention busi...

Re: Politics

Moving this to the cesspool thread because it is getting away from the specific topic of the Grand closures and has a lot of potential to run so much farther off the rails. But I suspect the movement overall discouraged people from becoming police officers. Thus, I think it has to be at least part o...

Re: Downtown Baseball Stadium

I just think it is very shortsighted to not be considering it. We literally voted on it for the last renovation and it was rejected. It has been considered, and to the extent that people are talking about it now, it is on some level being considered again, but it seems like it just isn't wanted. Vo...

Re: UMKC projects

Do we want more traffic on Brookside Blvd? Why not use the excess ROW for a future streetcar extension, improved Trolley Trail or both? The future is fewer cars in our cities, not more. There is plenty of dedicated ROW owned by the city for streetcar and Trolley Trail that you don't need to put it ...

Re: GO ROYALS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Royals are the first team to win 7+ in a row with a sub-.300 winning percentage at least 100 games into a season since the 23-78 Cardinals won nine straight in 1907. I’m not about to weigh seven games more heavily than the 104 games that came before them but it’s been a fun week at least.

Re: Kansas City will likely suffer 'off the charts' heat in the next 30 years, new study predicts

I don't think Highlander is off base here. Just speaking anecdotally, I have run into denialists who swear that "scientists" predicted that by the 2020s sea levels would have already risen by several feet, and now it's the 2020s and the sea has not (permanently) taken Wall Street or Miami ...
