Re: Folk Alliance International 2014

It's a permanent store, and has been there for at least 6 months. I read somewhere that they are considering moving to the Boone Theater in the Jazz District.

Re: Status and future of the River Market area??

Yeah, it's not very big, and the quick glimpse I got while driving past looked more like a storefront and roaster than a café. I couldn't figure out why they had the Latteland locations on the Kaldi's website. Same ownership group? They are the actual roaster for Latteland? Latteland website implies...

Re: Status and future of the River Market area??

Something called Kaldi's Coffee Roasting just put a sign up on the former moving company location on 5th Street (between Walnut and Grand, north side, next to where Scrape the Plate used to be). Quick Google search shows that they're a local chain in St. Louis and somehow affiliated with LatteLand. ...

Re: Folk Alliance International 2014

This conference will be here until at least 2018 Would you do the Northern or Southern Van Tour. http://www.folkalliance.org/conference/see-kansas-city/ Well, it's committed for that long, but if they don't get people registering and attending shows, then there's no guarantee they'd keep having it....

Re: Folk Alliance International 2014

Yeah, they have a "limited" number (not sure what that translates to) that will be on-sale starting at 5:00 each day. They were pretty lax about checking for tickets last night, but that was kinda the "opening reception." Not sure if they will be cracking down today.

Folk Alliance International 2014

I didn't have tickets, but I hit up the opening night of this conference at Crown Center last night. This is a legitimate international affair -- I met musicians from the Netherlands, Scotland, Australia, and Canada, as well as the more mundane music generating cities. "Folk" appears to be...

Well, I don't know if the character is supposed to be George or not. But seeing as how the most famous Royal ever is a third baseman, it doesn't seem like it would be a coincidence.

Re: KC in TV and Movies

The ABC Family series, Switched at Birth, shows images of Kansas City on their episode promotions. The show is about two teens switched at birth from very different backgrounds. One lives with a wealthy family in Mission Hills, Kansas, and the other grew up in Riverside, Missouri. http://en.wikiped...

Re: Missouri's paw-paw French dialect fading into silence

That was the deal with Lawrence Welk. He was born in the US, but everyone in his town in North Dakota was German. Even after two or three generations, everyone either still spoke German or spoke it with a German accent.

It is always urban vs rural. Go find any map of how counties voted in the last presidential election. The only difference is how many urban areas you have.

I think it's pretty common to have to pay the winner's legal fees if you bring suit.

Re: Kansas to allow businesses to elect not to serve gay cou

Well, the businesses they've been talking about have been wedding photographers and cake bakers, so the two-groom cake topper would make it pretty obvious. But you're right -- when it starts to lap over to things like whether or not someone can rent an apartment, it gets a little trickier.

Re: Kansas to allow businesses to elect not to serve gay cou

The KS legislators say that the Muslim/Jew thing or similar would NOT be allowed because religion and race are Federally protected categories, whereas sexual orientation is not. I'm kinda OK with businesses not having to provide service to anyone that they don't want to provide service to. I am NOT ...

Re: Kansas to allow businesses to elect not to serve gay cou

Well, I imagine we'll find that out pretty quickly. I be very surprised if someone didn't actively do something to try to force it into the courts. As all those "defense of marriage" amendments start falling, lots of other state legislatures will be looking for this sort of ad hoc solution.

Re: Shovel your whole sidewalk; not just your doorstep.

I got a dog a couple of years ago, and I have to say that I'm pretty disgusted with most of Kansas City. Every walk turns into a total polar expedition, which is fun at first but is starting to get a Call of the Wild . And I live in a neighborhood with lots of pedestrians. I know because I can see t...
