Re: Uptown Shoppes
Wood construction as high quality as medieval-style half timbering and CLT unfortunately isn't what's being used in these five-over-one apartment projects though. As far as I know, it's basically the same stick frame system used on suburban homes, hotel's ect. Structures not exactly famous for agin...

Re: Downtown ballpark and condos
I worry about fusing buildings to the stadium itself--especially taller buildings. Stadiums tend to get torn down at some point. Fusing buildings to that stadium would mean tearing down the buildings as well. That seems unnecessary since the life cycle of a building should be much longer. I have no...

Re: We are getting a new airport!!!
Is there a publicly available layout of where each airline will be? They confirmed a while back in one of their media appearances (think it was KSHB?) that the existing terminal B tenants would move to the new western B gates. The current terminal C airlines, for the most part, would be in the east...

Re: We are getting a new airport!!!
Flew out of KCI yesterday afternoon and overheard a SW gate agent talking to a flight crew member. They said the new terminal is apparently ahead of schedule by a magnitude of months. Because of that, discussions are supposedly being had about moving the airlines over in waves (rather than all at on...

Re: OFFICIAL - Artistry KC (19th and Oak)
"This building has a gym and a pool, therefore it's detrimental to downtown." I'm sure I'm going to regret engaging on this, but this argument makes no sense. A) What? Obviously, a fitness center and/or pool isn't going to be replacing people's shopping or dining downtown. Are we just hype...

Re: OFFICIAL - Artistry KC (19th and Oak)
I find parking garage louvers more pleasant to look at than over-weight lawyers on ellipticals. Alright. If you’re more pleased by screened parking than active uses (not just retail) then we’re just fundamentally not going to agree on the form of the city. Artistry would require a start over, not a...

Re: OFFICIAL - Artistry KC (19th and Oak)
A lack of retail does not equal dead space. I don't think every building downtown needs retail along it's entire first floor. And if a demand for retail became strong enough both buildings would simply be retro-fitted. I find both buildings very interesting to walk by as they are. Reverb will get e...

Re: OFFICIAL - Artistry KC (19th and Oak)
Centropolis & Reverb have effectively dead ground floors. That’s not good urbanism. Good density, sure. But on the urban front it’s shit.
Cordish was able to hide parking because P&L is subsidized to the hilt. It’s not a viable expectation for buildings with minimal or no public subsidy.

It’s been three months since the last proper status report was released. Anybody know what’s up?

I'm cool with whatever Nick Cave wants to invent. I don’t think it’s Nick Cave of Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds. I think it’s this guy: https://art21.org/artist/nick-cave/ He’s done similar pieces to what’s proposed here: https://art21.org/read/is-there-racism-in-heaven-an-interview-with-nick-cave/

Re: We are getting a new airport!!!
Initial selections for the art pieces have been unveiled: https://www.buildkci.com/images/first-four-artists-chosen-for-kansas-city-international-airport-new-terminal-public-art/ The sketch up screenshots don’t seem like they do some of them justice. (No surprise.) Looking at the previous work of th...

That's a great get.
Some will scoff at it, but the urban core could use more "urbanized" fast food like that. Helps to make a wider range of people feel comfortable in the area.

Re: Office project at 27th & Main
We need design standards to guide developers to build better for their surrounding environment / neighborhood. A development team is out for one thing, their own profit. Smh won't fix that machine. This cannot get stressed enough. If you set up strong design standards before any project is proposed...

Re: Office project at 27th & Main
Worth noting the plan also shows no exterior entry into the supposed tenant spaces. Those look an awful lot like building tenant amenity space, not retail tenant space. Some rooms have no openings or doors at all drawn in... Sorry, but I'll disagree. The red circles highlight all the doors on the p...

Re: Office project at 27th & Main
Any developer or architecture firm that designs a parking garage with a curved/non-rectilinear layout and then asks for incentives should be laughed out of the room.

Re: 1650 Broadway
If he thinks a major fast food chain would do a multi-year pop-up in an old Denny’s, then he’s super disconnected to how those businesses operate.
I think it’s more likely he was shooting the shit on Twitter, not providing insight on a major development.
