Re: "Study: Sprawl costs billions; Sacramento area pays high price."
Those governments and property owners outside the development loop have a right to develop their property just like anyone else. In many instances those outlaying communities have been in existence for many years. It isn't like they have all of the sudden been created. Yes, lot sizes can be sma...

Re: The Star rates top ten local suburban hellholes
if i can find the actual study, i will post exact info. it was actually referenced to in a book. regardless, coming from personal experience, 3 people out of my highschool class died in separate car wrecks out of 50 kids. and this number has increased since graduation. this is not counting other dea...

Re: "Study: Sprawl costs billions; Sacramento area pays high price."
exactly. people forget that there are many shades of walkable, sustainable urban living. we arent demanding this from builders, rather, we accept what is forcefed because this model is what makes them money. becoming educated on this subject seems to be the only way out of this as a society. but ame...

Re: "Study: Sprawl costs billions; Sacramento area pays high price."
i think part of the problem is wasted and extravagant infrastructure. number numbers numbers, right, they all add up. there is a difference between bu idling a walkable community that is relatively spread out, like midtown or even brookside, and a completely automobile dependent area with ridiculous...

"Residents of the area centered on Sacramento will pay $57,093 per person by 2025 to cover the additional costs caused by sprawling development, second only to Las Vegas among U.S. economic centers that face the sprawl problem, a new book asserts." Full story: http://www.bizjournals.com/sa...

Re: The Star rates top ten local suburban hellholes
Well, its a balancing act. How can we attract suburban visitors and surburbanites to move to KCMO while still retaining KC's urban-ness? keep kc urban! if anything, its urbane nature is a novelty to suburban visitors. why visit the city if its like the suburbs? why are suburban people moving to dow...

regardless of its faults, umkc is certainly heading in the right direction by adding quality residential options. there is definitely something lacking on campus due to the low number of students who dont jump in their cars after class and speed away. still, there is more going on here than one woul...

Re: The Star rates top ten local suburban hellholes
you got it Max. The burbs are doing something right, and we'd better figure out what it is and emulate it. well, unfortunately, kc already tried that, and in the process destroyed much of the urban fabric that made it unique in the first place. if kansas city wants to succeed, its going to have to ...

Re: End of Suburbia: Oil Depletion and the Collapse of the American Dream
i suppose my previous education in history tought me, if anything, that civilizations collapse but that the human species has nonetheless managed to survive.
therefore, i believe that this civilization will collapse, sooner or later, and we as a species, will live on.
and also: it's gonna hurt.

"So society will accept the changes that will occur, adjust, and move on. If not, its back to the middle ages. And you seemed to overlook what was at the end of the post. Is life different? Yes. There are energy sources other than oil and those will come into play more as time goes on.Â...

Re: The Star rates top ten local suburban hellholes
KC North is still governed by KCMO so it is not a suburb. yes, you are right, it is governed by kcmo. however, the nature of the built environment and the way that people interact with it and other areas of the metro including the center city from these far flung suburban/exurban locales has to b...

i wish there were more "new urbanist" schemes that were using a humble "village centers" as a focal point that serves primarily the residents of that immediate vicinity within a 10 minute walk. lots of these small developments, fewer large scale destination type places. this look...
