Re: Texas and Nebraska battle for companies.
By the way... I trust you all know NFM is owned by Buffett. While he doesn't typically meddle in the affairs of his holdings, if you're familiar with Nebraska Furniture Mart, it was a somewhat personal acquisition for him, close relationship with it's (now departed) founder, "Mrs. B".

Re: Texas and Nebraska battle for companies.
Council Bluffs doesn't have any worse crime than Omaha on average, and far less than northeast Omaha (which is our closest thing to East STL here, probably more like KC's SSE side), asides perhaps from property stuff... average one or two homicides a year. CB is dominated by blue collar whites (a bi...

Lingerie Football League coming to Omaha http://susanshan.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/Lingerie-Football-League.jpg Something called the Lingerie Football League is coming to Ralston's 3,500-seat arena next year. Not much description is required here: leggy women in pads, bras, panties and little...

Well, actually it's named for the street... the creek hasn't existed for over 100 years.

Possibility of an NBA D League team in Omaha Ralston's mayor and other city officials will travel Wednesday to Denver to pitch a plan to bring a development league team affiliated with professional basketball's Nuggets to the city's new arena. Re: News from Omaha
Creighton set a new record for attendance at the CenturyLink Center over the weekend ... Brad Williams caught the scene (pink with a breast cancer event going on)... they hit 18,400. Creighton is flying high ranked #12 (RPI 14) right now... although it's no doubt more a statement on Omaha being a re...

Re: News from Omaha
Unfortunately it's a bit of a fortress at street level (same as First National Center)... although you can walk into the lobby and visit a souvenir shop/eat at a cafeteria inside. The floor to ceiling atrium is somewhat impressive. http://www.walterpmoore.com/images/projects/commercial/unionPacific/...

Probably chasing property tax revenue in the same way Omaha has... although at least we have had some new growth from within as well.

Re: News from Omaha
Correct, Omaha can thank Union Pacific for it's rise. It's actually somewhat amazing that Omaha has managed to retain their headquarters all these years (actually they left to Denver and Dallas a number of years over the past couple of decades). I don't know how many cities out there can point to su...

Re: News from Omaha
St. Joseph! It was larger than KC or Omaha around the time of the Civil War, and the same size as Omaha as of 1900 (however, I think that's another case of a sketchy census number, the one for St. Joe in 1900, along with St. Louis in I think 1870). I don't know about St Joe, but actually... Omaha w...

Re: News from Omaha
Didnt Omaha briefly overtake KC in (metro) population? Yeah... Omaha a tiny shadow of KC in metro population (still looking for 1 million.. hopefully in this decade). I think there was a year, following the Elkhorn annexation, when we may have briefly passed or closely matched the city of KC in pop...

Re: News from Omaha
A little history... 'South Omaha' was actually a separate incorporated city until bigger Omaha annexed it in 1915 (there are a number of former municipalities which Omaha annexed over the past century with the help of Nebraska's liberal annexation laws... most recent example being Elkhorn). You migh...

I don't miss the stock yards, the livestock exchange building remains a good landmark... my grandfather of course referred to the 'smell of money'. http://www.livinghistoryfarm.org/farminginthe50s/media/money1401.jpg http://www.city-data.com/forum/members/papillion1707-423124-albums-historic-omaha-i...
