Re: Status and future of the River Market area??

Very late to the game, but I'm really disappointed with the direction of City Market. In my opinion, they should have gone more in the direction of creating a large stone plaza that you can occasionally drive on, rather than making it into a driving area that you can occasionally walk on with curbs...

Re: Are downtown apartment occupancy rapidly trending down?

FWIW, the apartment complex (I think only 4 apartment building) on my street in the Westside North has never had to advertise a vacancy in my over 10 years of living here, but has had a "For Lease" sign up for a few months now. I don't think it says anything by itself, but it shows there i...

Re: North Kansas City

Iron District's hours might be just as big a threat to its survival as opening just before winter. The hours are confusing... especially the bizarre gap on Saturdays. Then each individual vendor can set their own hours within those already limited and confusing hours. So there's really no clear way...

Re: KU-MU rivalry reborn?

I honestly haven't heard KU fans calling for the basketball game to come back, so maybe I'm unplugged from the vast majority. As for football, that one limits your scheduling options a lot more. Basketball games can be thrown on the calendar at will, but football games are harder to schedule in the ...

Re: KU-MU rivalry reborn?

Part of me is excited to see them play again. Part of me is sad there will never be a meaningful game between them ever again (unless they meet in the NCAA tournament). People will get amped up on both sides, but I think KU did this just to deflect from other news they've been making. I'm still bitt...

Re: OFFICIAL: Port Authority Riverfront Project

Have they resolved the heating/cooling inefficiency issues with shipping containers (see also condensation/humidity/toxins)? Are the containers really environmentally friendly after you account for the heating/cooling/insulation needs? I'm all for repurposing and recycling, but there are some import...

Re: OFFICIAL - City Club Apartments (former Midwest Hotel)

That would be the perfect opportunity for somewhere like Freshwater to relocate, but it sounds like that isn't it due to the comments above. I'd love another wine concept from the Rieger folks since Ca Va has been so well-curated (but would hope they keep the main restaurant where it is). I could al...

Re: Beardsley Road

I did go to the meeting last night, and while I understand the intended context, it was a bit of a faceplant. Work has already started on the project, so it isn't totally clear why this meeting happened now and not a month ago (will be finished by summer 2020). Most people at the meeting were older ...

Re: Beardsley Road

I may try to hop down to this. One would hope this is seen as an opportunity to put a pedestrian walkway and cycle lane all the way through to the River Market, but that would require more than just fixing the portion of the bridge/support that is damaged. The upper Beardsley portion (South of 12th ...

Re: Rye

It has been years since I've been, but Brookville Hotel (in Abilene) is the best non-fast food fried chicken I've had in the region.

I probably won't come back to Rye for food, but I will likely be back for bourbon.

Re: beer.

Stopped into Rochester Brewing on First Friday. Had a hazy IPA (b/c of course) and a black currant sour. Really enjoyed both. Quality offerings in a nice space. I wish them well and will return. I've been glad to see them work the dual coffee roasting/beer brewing concept. They have terrific mornin...

Re: Rye

So, had my first visit to Rye on the Plaza this past weekend... Am I missing something about the fried chicken? The batter was unique, but it is far from great as has been described by many. I tried a bit of food from all four people at my brunch (B&G, omelette, and chicken sandwich), and nothin...

Their beer is pretty good, though. Better crafted than most I've tried in KC.

Re: Film Row building threatened with demolition

^ No tipping in Europe and the service is lousy! It’s not really the fault of the server. If a place has 10 tables, they have one server for all of them. Of course, they would likely give a strange look at talking about being a server as a career. I'd much rather be in the position of solving the p...

Re: Westside happenings

I may be jumping the gun, but so far the Westside Flats build seems like a nice addition to the area, and the final build along 17th St. will be much much nicer (IMO) than the initial renderings. After all of the arguments back and forth, EPC built underground parking with no tax abatement (after th...

Re: Film Row building threatened with demolition

The American system... "Why pay them a liveable wage when we can rely on the random and totally unmandated generosity of strangers?" The fact that it is our stupid system and there are so many differing opinions on how to deal with it is proof it doesn't work. I've also caught (accidentall...

Re: Film Row building threatened with demolition

Finding the right servers for a whisky-focused bar is a big challenge (and creating a menu listing and up-to-date prices is also really tough). Very few bars are good at actually presenting what they have or tend to only steer you to the same products over and over (see overhyped high-margin whiskie...
