Re: KC grows to 35th largest city in latest census data
Most free population data by ZIP (that I know of) is only calculated by official census count every 10 years. You can type a ZIP into the interface on census.gov site, but it will pull back population figures from 2000.

Re: The definitive Midtown Tulsa photo thread
I love the pics - am very surprised at the number of infill condos in the central core. It all looks really nice and I'm looking forward to a visit. I wish they wouldn't use terms like NoChe and SoBo (and I'm glad KC didn't settle on SoLo for the Xroads)...it makes any city using them seem unorigi...

KC grows to 35th largest city in latest census data
New census data lists KC as the 35th largest city at 482,299. http://www.census.gov/popest/cities/tables/SUB-EST2009-01.xls Slower growth rate over the past year than some other cities in the region, but a nice increase over the 441,000 from 2000. Wichita led the region in growth rate since the pre...

Re: Big 12 is fine, everybody off the ledge...oh yeah, we lost NU/CU and get more $$
The Pac 16 offered OKC basketball as a partial host with a West Coast city. Tournament sites were to be split between the coast and Texas. The PAC 10 bball tourney can't even sell out the Staples center in the second largest metro area in the country that's home to two member schools. And if peopl...

Re: Convention hotel proposal for P&L building (and surrounding block)
What choice would they have? Let the building sit empty? Or are you suggesting that there's no way either of the management deals will be allowed to expire? He'd know better than I what he's got up his sleeve, although it's hard not to be a little cynical that the head of Crown Center is in favor o...

Re: el rancho - 4am mexican food in westport.
I've been going to El Rancho for the past couple of years and LOVE it. My understanding is that El Rancho was started by one of the partners from Sol Azteca after a falling out with the other partners. Rancho has the same (and more) great-tasting food, but it's cheaper and faster. The torta del p...

Re: Kansas City Officially Has A New Mayor - Mark Funkhouser
His whole 'I'm fightin' for the ordinary folks like myself' schtick is getting old. OK if he wants to poke a stick at the big, bad establishment and political process, but he's even been fighting against the people he appointed to positions like the park board and TIF board. Regardless, the other c...

Re: Convention hotel proposal for P&L building (and surrounding block)
there is no clear public benefit I disagree - hundreds of jobs at the hotel, increased revenue from the room tax, construction jobs, money spent on local vendors, any new conventions would add to taxes generated at the airport, more business at local restaurants which would help servers. Not every...

Looks like realignment isn't over yet - K-State apparently is hosting the Beef Conference:

Re: Urban Gardening and Landscaping
On the downside, insects are eating the leaves of my tomato plants so I'll have to spray something on them (and the other night I caught a rabbit eating my hostas). If you find something that works well for insects eating veggie leaves, let me know - the soap-based stuffed I've tried hasn't done mu...

I'm guessing the conference will be just fine for years to come, with the north continuing to be all too content to suck off Texas and company. :) Except the schools that remain in the Big 12 realize there are more sports to a conference than football, the conference RPI in basketball won't be drug...

Ugh - I didn't realize this was part of the deal: Kansas, Kansas State, Baylor, Iowa State and Missouri -- who were in danger of being left homeless if the conference dissolved -- agreed to give up their share in buyout penalties to be paid by Nebraska and Colorado for leaving the league, Beebe said...

I'm all for transit options that include the sports complex, especially if it includes some sort of rail transit. But if out of towners are going to make fun of the amenities surrounding the stadium, imagine what they'll say about a ride through the rail corridor of the east bottoms.

Re: New Target Field in Minnesota
I thought the prevailing thought was stadiums create spinoff development. Its kinda silly to think that they would build the stadium and voila, a bar district would pop up around it overnight. I'm with you - a stadium or arena in an already 'nice' part of town means a) land costs more and b) spinof...

Try betterbidding.com - they list hotels for each city as defined by Hotwire and Priceline, as well as winning bids for certain dates. You can look up which hotel Priceline lists by amenity and also seeing how much people paid for them during your dates. Also, if you have AAA, there are some good ...

Re: THE BIG 12 GOES KABLOOEY!!!1!1!!!!1!! Everybody panic
I wonder if the Pac 10 is regretting their Colorado invitation? It seemed to me a ploy to start the ball rolling towards gaining the Texas schools. Backfire? I never quite understood the appeal of Colorado on it's own - maybe it'll become clearer when the dust settles. Would Colorado have any na...
