Re: UMKC Conservatory of Music considers move to downtown
Westport High School would be a terrible location. I thought the whole idea was to get the Conservatory downtown near the epicenter of the Arts community? And Westport High has the lowest visibility of any location [other than 63rd.]. The Denny's location would have excellent visibility, great highw...

Re: Phase 2 streetcar to UMKC
Lots of speculation but no real hard numbers yet. Perhaps they should have budgeted to buy American steel in the first place. Is Chinese steel really 40% cheaper than US steel even after transport that so many contractors are buying Chinese before American? If so, that should be a huge red flag. Thi...

Re: Amenities missing from downtown
I don't understand why Target is not looking at KCMO. It's like Downtown KC is not even on their radar and yet they are opening dozens of new stores and have been doing so for years. KC can't be that far down the list. We have an urban Target in the suburb I live in. (two stories, on top of garage)...

Re: Three Light
Two light is "expected to be fully occupied by fall" but Three Light "won't begin construction until 2019?" So they made a huge change to the time line? I thought the original plan was to begin Three construction when Two reached a certain % leased? Now they are postponing Three ...

Re: 1800 Walnut
Like this project. Perfect scale and design. 18th Street has taller buildings on it now. The Crossroads people concerned with the height need to understand that new construction requires a certain amount of density. Is it any wonder none of them have built new? 18th Street has become the main E-W th...

Re: Downtown Masterplan
To be fair, there aren't that many historic buildings left in the Paseo West neighborhood. A few, yes. There are 45 blocks in Paseo West, and probably 28 older buildings worth saving, and a smattering of individual houses. Exactly this. Paseo West could use a complete overhaul. Sure, make an effort...

Re: Historic Old Northeast
The historic NE doesn't have the dense apartment building setup throughout the neighborhood places like Columbus Park or Longfellow do It used to have them, 99% of them have been torn down. There used to be very large multi-story tenement houses on Admiral, Independence Ave, 8th and 9th st. Sadly, ...

2005 Royals Washington Park Site Overview Please let me know what you think of this. Suggestions are welcomed. I could make something like this for the Northloop as well. Fantastic job. I wish KC had the vision to something like this but this place is almost hopeless. (I hear Julia Kaufmann chiding...

Re: 18th and Vine
Is this restaurant going to be in the 18th & Vine district or Smithville? I read somewhere she was opening this or a similar restaurant in Smithville. She already has a successful restaurant in Smithville; Soiree New Orleans Bistro. [one of the best brunches in KC] This is her new venture, more...

Re: Phase 2 streetcar to UMKC
Westport wasn’t annexed urban development. It was suburbs with homes on suburban style lots. The city annexed neighborhoods full of single family homes and it’s been building up ever since.
You're even more clueless than I imagined you were before. The term ...

Re: Phase 2 streetcar to UMKC
HORRIBLY wrong. The city stopped at 9th St originally. You're talking about the boundary after the 5th set of annexations! You are hung up on undeveloped land annexation, I'm discussing urban DEVELOPMENT. That is clearly the topic, but you've managed to start another meaningless argument Every city...

Re: Phase 2 streetcar to UMKC
it most certainly did not just develop from the center outwards. It developed piecemeal from the beginning. It was developers being able to buy a specific farm at a preferred location far away from Westport that jumpstarted the city. Westport didn't build outwards, d...

This might help you. This is KC as a real city in 1907. You can see it is a tight, urbanized city.

Re: Phase 2 streetcar to UMKC
There won't be any midtown riff raff to worry about anymore. The streetcar generated gentrification will drive them out. Midtown will no longer be a great supply of affordable housing. The affordable housing crisis in this city is going to come to a head here. I imagine it will be many years before...
