Re: Do you own a car?

i agree with TK's general point...but what is someone who lives at 138th and Quivira supposed to do?  bike to work downtown?  burn their own house down and replenish native plants?  there isn't any question that the car-centric planning and policies of the last 60 years have decimated our cities an...

Re: WWLCSN (What Would Lewis & Clark Say Now?): A Photo Essay by Dave

Thanks Dave.  The Missouri River is a fairly mysterious entity to almost all Kansas Citians who rarely venture onto its floodplain, let alone to its banks.  Of the two possible end members that I would find desirable for such a prominent river next to a great city; leave it be as semi-natural parkla...

Re: Do you own a car?

i agree that TK is using hyperbolic language (e.g. "slave"), but i think it's pretty obvious that modern humans in many places around the world are inextricably linked to their cars, especially in newer US cities.  how pathetic is it that people will drive 4 blocks?  cars have become so i...

Re: Do you own a car?

Do I have a chip on my shoulder? Yes. Do I come off as combatitive? I hope so. We have wasted enough time letting car droids destroy the built and cultural life on cities and it's time to wake up. Take your cars and your carcentric lifestyle and keep it in the suburbs before I hit your 2 ton crutch...

Re: Changing Weather

I remember singing the following words in grade school (Troost School): Over the river and through the woods, To grandmother's house we go; The horse knows the way to carry the sleigh, Through the white and drifted snow, O! (http://www.smart-central.com/HolidayPages/overtheriver.htm) ...and thinkin...

Re: OFFICIAL - Arena construction

i agree that the att building isnt the best looking.  I think they should put up either neon signs or vid screens on the large blank sides.  even maybe a mural or something.  If it was decorated right, it could completely change the appearance of it. i especially think the vid screen would look nic...

Re: Changing Weather

I remember one Halloween in Kansas City back in the early 50s when it snowed on me as I was running around the neighborhoods in costume. Even though I was born in the late 50's, my recollection does not go back that far....but since that time, I can remember at least 1 additional dusting of snow on...

Re: Wal-mart in KCK

I commend your wife. She is a rarity in the public education field. However her job is still not nearly as taxing as the cashier. Her extra reward for being a teacher is having almost 2 months off a year while making 30k including probably 10 paid government holidays. The retail  worker is working ...

Re: Wal-mart in KCK

Why shouldn't the cashier make more money? He has the more dificult job. Being    a cashier is physically taxing. And many have to work outside as well getting carts. What does the teacher do? I tell you what they do, they sit at a desk in an ultra plush chair and let their student helper grade all...

Re: I can't wait for the new smoking ban in Kansas City!

When people drink and drive, the responsibility is with the person drinking and the person serving the drinks. Bars should be held accountable to serving excessive alcohol to individuals and then putting them on the road. This is another accountability issue. I have no problem with smoking bans in ...

Sprint Call Center coming to West Bottoms

According to the Star, Sprint will occupy the former Gateway Building in the west bottoms bringing 800 jobs close to downtown.  Great news.

Re: Do you own a car?

It's not about preference. It's about endurance. Suburbanites are soft-serve... Have a survivor competition with strict urbanites vs. people from 119th and Blackbob if you want to see who is truly evolved. I think you are coming across as extremely arrogant in this discussion.  You have made it a g...

Re: P&L District: 14th & Main Site Proposal

I've noticed on the webcam what appears to be large earth moving machinery and the beginnings of a depression in the middle of this block (immediately east of the Empire).  Are there plans for more underground parking facilities within the P&L District?

There are seemingly a lot of restaurants of a similar genre that are signing up now. Do we still feel like HRC is a probability?  I've never thought HRC was that great of a restaurant but having one around does seem to be among the criteria of a truly happening town.

Re: Fear of an Urban Planet...

I went and reread the incident, because I thought perhaps I had missed something in the original post that perhaps gave good cause for this thread to continue for 3 pages. What I read was that a cop saw 3 people downtown that were unfamiliar. One of the people matched a description of someone suspe...

Bushnell Optical and Williams Foods (in Lenexa)  I think Bushnell is part of Bauch and Lomb, but their divisional headquarters is here. Although not companies, Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and Camp Fire USA have their headquarters in KCMO. Also there is Faultless Starch/Bon Ami (both household na...

Re: ABOVE wichita (check it out!)

The Arkansas must not be much of a threat to flood - must be nice to have a river that doesn't need massive levies distancing it from the city.  Must be nice to not have to build all of your bridges and viaducts hundreds of feet up in the air in order to accomodate some theoretical, Queen Mary-size...

(ghost of Devin rises from the grave) Let him go to Drury, better than UMKC by far, one of the best colleges IMO, and it has a really beautiful campus. Though it can cost 20,000 a year w/o any financial aid/scholarships. (poof) So, 'ghost of Devin'......what college are you going to haunt...mm....a...

Why shouldn't he be doing better than you? Just because you got a degree doesn't mean you're entitled to make more money than a grocery store employee. Nothing entitles anybody to anything.  However, if you are fortunate enough to get a college education, you must sacrifice 4 years (or more) of you...

Re: KC Ethnic Festival This Weekend at Swope Park!

What is this Burns Night that you speak of? Its pretty much the national holiday of Scotland....perhaps a bit like our Thanksgiving.  Robert Burns was a Scottish poet and evidently quite a character and apparently quite a ladies man.  Everyone gets together over here , the men in their kilts, to ho...
