Re: Nelson-Atkins Expansion (YES..white glass is the end result)
FIRST MAJOR REVIEW (that I have read) from Metropolis And it is a doozy. Some quotes - " . . . one of the most captivating contemporary museum experiences since the opening of the Tate Modern." " . . . the building is a rare instance when the hyperbole of architectural rhetoric i...

Well - ineteresting to note that in Chicago the first Daley Machine was brought down by an inability to remove the snow effectively. While underlying reform issues were ultimately were the cause, the fact that Bilandic (then Mayor) didn't get the snow removed quickly and effectively in a horrible l...

knucklehead - well put. I like a lot of what you said. I like this - "I like walking between the old and new buildings to get from the the front to the back lawn and how the north side is one level higher than the south side. I like how the main building by the reflective pool is basically an...

funny - I was going to link that article. The Washington Post has an article about the new Swiss Embassy in DC designed by Holl that has discusses the Bloch. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/12/31/AR2006123100916.html There has also been an uptick on blogs about the additi...

Re: 10th & Main Osco to Close 5 September
re: the floors. I bet they use carpet tiles on top of the old floor. That's what they did with an old (and awful) Osco here. CVS is big on the carpeted store thing. Bluish gray black with some red carpet tile accents.

Re: Gates Building, Sentinel Federal Savings Buildings Packaged Together For Sale
^^ That is correct. I can't remember the number of floors, but the idea for the UMB building was one side of the courtyard could have the height increased to around eighteen floors and the foundation was built accordingly. I remember that everyone was pretty psyched that UMB was staying downtown, ...

Only a couple more weeks until I am there. Super happyfuntimes! The more I see, the more excited I am. Scooterj, I love that second picture. For me, that shows the brilliance of the vision that Holl had (to put the building on the east) and how it not only acts as a piece of sculptural architect...

Wow! Fantastic Photos. Looks terrific. Love photo #5. Is it cool looking in and down into the lobby? Really can get a sense of how the building weaves up and down in landscape. Plus - "way to go" N-A with the refurbished KC Sclupture Park. I am excited about seeing it this month.

Quick Update - The Bloch Building will be open to the public one week earlier, June 9, 2007. http://www.nelson-atkins.org/welcome/PressRoom_Releases.cfm?type=Release (top item) The Nelson-Atkins website has MUCH more on it, mainly an interactive feature on the Sculpture Park. Some decent...

Once again - Thanks, thanks, thanks, thanks for the photos. Wow. Call me Cracky McCrack, but I kinda do like the walls. Well, I don't hate them. A couple of the photos make them look amazing. But pictures can do that. I will have to wait until I get there to gauge their impact. The inability t...

Re: Nelson-Atkins Expansion (YES..white glass is the end result)
Honestly - The south lawn of the Nelson is fantastic. To the best of my knowledge it is used a good deal. I would go to the concerts on the lawn (early 80's) and was there in 1983 when the fireworks debacle occurred. Wheee! When I lived cater-corner from the museum (47th & Oak) I frequently w...

Pictures (from archidose) http://archidose.blogspot.com/2006/07/bloch-pics-update.html I agree with his comment that the debate about the quality of the addition will not be quelled by the photos. I still really like the addition and some of the photos are spectacular. The interior shots simply fil...

^^haHA!! It does seem a little dismissive. I wondered if maybe it was because he doesn't seem to be that involved. Plus, it's not as if his namesake institution is a phenomenal work of art.
