I thought it would be a nice touch also, kind of like what the staff at the Savoy Grill wears.

Re: How public space can look, feel, and function

It's surprising talking to normal, non-crazy people in France about the Arabs that live in a lot of the southern cities. The French talk about them like they're animals. I just returned from 2 weeks in southern France (I'll post some pics later today).  While there is a very prominent arab presence...

Re: Fixing the KC Zoo (ongoing)

I found this homepage while searching for some updates on how the KC Zoo was coming along post the passing of the latest funding initiative. I actually really like the KC Zoo and have been a big supporter in the past.  Those of you who feel the same or are just interested in photography may enjoy th...

Re: How public space can look, feel, and function

london is probably the most diverse city in the world.  europe is incredibly diverse, though in a different way from the US.  the UK is awash in peoples from former British colonies - South Asian, Caribbean, etc. as well as lots of africans and eastern europeans.  There is a big difference between ...

Re: Webcams to waste your day

I enjoy these cams and only wish they had a few more angles.

Nonetheless, even though I've put this on my favorite list, it might be nice to put this thread permanently at the top of the page like the first two threads in this room for easy access.

Re: beer.

I've actually learned something from this thread.

One question regarding beer and where its made; many companies tout their water source as unique (e.g., Coors), while I am skeptical that this actually makes any difference, doesn't this restrict where the beer can be made?

Re: Do you own a car?

One issue with KC's mass transit, that boognish touched on, is that a lot of higher income jobs aren't served by it.  This is a bigger issue then just running a bus line to Lenexa, but people who work in Overland Park just aren't going to ride the bus to work when it runs twice a day and then you h...

Re: Do you own a car?

Why do you continue to ignore the fact that people like me are in the vast minority of carfree transit users? There are hundreds of families who rely on mass transportation to get everywhere they need to go in Lawrence. I wouldn't even begin to estimate the large number of people with disabilities ...

A bit of a side issue but in the second photo, you can now see the new fed reserve bank peaking over the hill that forms the north side of PVP.  First time I've seen a photo where the actual building was visible from downtown.

Re: Gas prices...who whores who

I'm gonna save up some money and buy shares in Valero, and if I can, some smaller takeover target oil firms as well.  :D Not a bad strategy but be prepared to ride some ups and downs as oil stocks generally fluctuate with price.  But, as you state, the takeover issue could be paramount in these gen...

Re: Gas prices...who whores who

For the most part, I don't blame the oil companies (except they should be paying the US government royalties for drilling in federal lands!) They do and its a fairly significant amount (expressed in both percent of take and as money paid to acquire the lease by bid) although it is admittingly less ...

Re: Do you own a car?

I love how car slaves are experts on the lifestyle of people without cars. I have commuted to a job in the suburbs for over a year without the use of a car (mostly getting off work after bus service ended). I am a more reliable employee without a car than most of the people with them and have even ...

Re: Migration patterns and it's affect on the KC metro attidue

Seems this set also seems to locate into the exurbs at a higher percentage...which I totally understand because that's what they are used to.  My point here is I think this influx of those from smaller areas works against the old school "Can Do" KC attitude of the 20's and rather feeds th...

Also, there are churches on practically every corner that offer that sort of education free of charge so there's no need to offer it in school when it's available elsewhere already.  If parents are truly concerned that their kids aren't learning enough about their religion they need to do their job...

OMG! Highlander you sound really, really out of touch. There are thousands and thousands of Kansas Citians and Lawrencians without cars and they are about as far from yuppies as you can get. TK, Chriz made my point about the difference between "thriving" and "enduring".  I do no...

i agree with your last paragraph completely. your first paragraph misses the point.  i was just suggesting that "Drive-thru culture" is a minor problem compared to the consequences of other decisions americans make.  if i ride the bus tomorrow, that is a small act that won't change the st...

Re: Do you subscribe to the Kansas City Star?

I read the Star online ... but only because it is impractical to subscribe while overseas.  Regardless of where I lived in the states (Denver, Tulsa etc...), I always subscribed to the Sunday Star and will again even if I move to a non-KC location in the states.
