The Future of Downtown: The Yuppie Issue

trailerkid - "Rise of the Creative Class," for all its (actual and purported) faults, cannot be interpreted as the Yuppie Manifesto. as a historical/economic text, it does little more than point out that over the past 20-30 years, the american economy has gone from being primarily "pr...

KCK Schools Suffer, I Blame the Legislature

education forms the foundation of our society. if KCK and other disadvantaged schools got the support they deserve, there wouldn't be as many f-ups shooting people. fear fear fear fear fear fear. america is safe. our schools are not. shame on the conservative primary education establishment for driv...

Downtown Baseball Stadium

if a stadium were built downtown (wishful thinking) i think it should go up by the river. if you create a nice hub of "urban synergy" up by the river, eventally the South Loop stuff and the stadium/river stuff would coalesce into a fantastic, vital corridor. but yeah. ain't gonna happen.

your favorite place in town?

what's your favorite place in Kansas City? why?

could be favorite bar, coffeeshop, park, sidewalk bench, restaurant, etc.

i'd have to say either broadway cafe or YJ's. they are good places to sit, relax, visit with friends, and engage in great people-watching.

you????

Grand Emporium Closing

that sucks. the GE is an institution. it would be great if it is reborn in KC Live, but why would they close the current one now and wait a few years to open again? if it's closing, i bet it's closing for good. as far as KC becoming "yuppified" like denver, i have a few comments on that: (...

Re: OFFICIAL - Arena construction

i am not too keen on the "plaza" over 670. i love greenspace and parks as much as anyone, but doesn't it seem like we should be pushing for maximum density downtown? there are a million parks in the city. it seems like we'd want to concentrate most on building a solid residential base down...

Visions for your own KC business?...

trailer, good call on the record store. KC is too big not to have a great indie record store (a la vintage vinyl in STL). the crossroads is a great place to have it too.

Re: OFFICIAL - Arena construction

^ i think that KC Live and the arena reflect the growth that downtown has experienced over the past 10 years, and they will in turn serve as catalysts for further growth. the higher downtown's profile is as a "place to be" or "place to go," the more people will want to live (and ...

Saks buildng on the Plaza

i am surprised the building was even allowed to look like that. yeah, Saks is a great tenant to score, but why should they be able to put a big stupid cube in the middle of such an architecturally distinct area? in fact, most of the Saks i've seen around the country built in the last 50 years look l...

where are the people???

^ that's kind of what i was thinking. hopefully, a higher profile for downtown KC will attract new businesses to the area and prompt relocation into the city as well. downtown should remain a CBD, but one where people live, work, and play. there seems to be more "big projects" coming to do...

OK, this may sound snobbish BUT......

this thread should be re-appropriated as the "Praise for Kansas City because it happens to kick some ass" thread. sometimes on forums like this it's easy to lose sight of the fact that we love this city and that it is currently having some success.

where are the people???

this is coming from someone who is only in KC a few months out of the year, but...i'll ask anyway. there are what, 10,000 people (or more) living downtown now? is it just me, or is the "street life" aspect of city living still missing? that seems like an awful lot of people downtown, but i...

OK, this may sound snobbish BUT......

i've been trying to explain to some of my st. louis friends just how many BIG things are going on in KC. predictably, though, based on KC's history, people usually take an "i'll believe it when i see it" approach. i can't get over how much is going into KC right now. the Nelson-Atkins expa...

Another 'City Index'

^ it's not that those people aren't capable of reviving a city...but if a city can become a hub for smart, hip young people, then the city often benefits substantially from that. a lot of critics of Florida's ideas always center on the "Gay Index" and "Bohemian Index" but those a...

Worst City For Dating?

Austin is like a gigantic college town (because, well, it IS). but in addition to UT, the city itself attracts tons of young single people. i am not surprised it is at the top of the list. KC is probably ok, but the scene seems to be pretty homogenous. either youre puking on your shoes at XO or your...
