Re: Downtown Mission/ The Gateway
that would be interesting, the key is to make things architecturally distinct though. I have a nagging fear that as developers start to cash in on the idea of the mixed-use zone-as-replacement-of-mall they will just continue to try to place replica mini plaza's throughout the city (i.e same color sc...

I agree with both of y'all, i mean yuppies definitely bring the money and attract the businesses that will try to serve them (which tend to be bigger wealtheir businesses ((often along the lines of chain stores for the basic amenities and boutique/gourmet stores for everything else)) ) Which is good...

Some update photos (8/27/04)
it would be cool if someone could take a picture a day of a certain development project from the exact same spot at the same angle and time of day (ok many too many conditions there?) and then put all the pics together after the project was completed to create a short animation

New Urbanism Update
The KC design center has a pretty cool program where they provide design services to communities that might not otherwise be able to hire firms to draw up community design ideas and improvements. Their website has a lot more information, http://www.kcdesigncenter.org/commdesign.html check it out peo...

Re: I-35 Fixed Guideway Alternatives Analysis Study
there are also other "costs" that aren't directly quantifiable such as air quality and other environmental impact but which are becoming more important. And like ignatius says, perhaps a rail system will encourage pedestrian friendly development around the train hubs (even though i could a...

hmm, they should focus on practical things, like streetscape improvements, supermarkets, road improvs, etc. before they get to the yuppie luxury items like free concerts.....

maybe there should be tax incentives to build these particular kinds of developments within existing city infrastructure?

even though i'm all for new urbanism developments, i wish more of them were done within existing infrastructure as infill redevelopment projects... (i know one of the above mentioned projects is kind of like that) but most seem like a different flavor of sprawl

Make KC Carfree...
yeah, i agree, more people walking on the streets would probably encourage others to join them (for any number of reasons,) (while providing a greater sense of safety for those peeps who are in tougher neighborhoods). Maybe with more people walking people would press politicians to make streets more...

totally agree with you trailerkid, at some point we are going to have to make a shift towards a more pedestrian friendly cityscape for economic, environmental and health reasons. The way cities (i'e suburbs) are being built today (centered around the car) is probably going to be pretty unviable in t...

belated response, but i'm sure with the insane amount of highway and street miles in Joco, they know they'll have more than enough infrastructure to be maintaining and expanding over the next couple of years to spare for the LRT construction and maintenance (even though i'm sure in the long run the ...

Questions about Bistate II
this discussion sounds like one of those chicken or the egg questions..... the suburbs developed out of KCMO, these days the suburbs do contain most of the economic activity of the metro area, but JOCO wouldn't have developed into a suburb without an urb to be a sub to. Either way, we should really ...

companies also determine where they move to based on quality of life issues (so as they can attract high quality employees and their families) part of that is the basic stuff like education, safe neighborhoods, cost of living but a huge part is also cultural advantages (sports teams, parks, arts, di...

Thinking on the Regional Scale
there seems to be a lot of back and forth bickering between Joco, KCMO, KCKS people usually along the lines of Joco perceiving itself as the one who unfairly "foots the bill" for downtown projects (?), KCMO having a kind of cultural moral snobbishness about suburbanites and their dwellings...

‘Urban Society' has big plans to improve KC
going along with ignatius says there should also be a very concerted effort to create viable and pleasing public spaces within the urban fabric that isn't completely linked to retail (as much as we need all the business and economic development downtown that we can get, putting aside public corners ...

DST wants to build new KC P&L HQers on Empire Theater si
new construction is good, but doing it at the cost of losing the older buildings is not a good policy for urban diversity. They should definitely go to the empty lots on the eastern side of downtown (yeah yeah, crime, vagrants, etc a factor, but at some point that problem has to get dealt with, and ...
