Re: Is KC Tenants destroying the development future of downtown KCMO?
The idea isn't really that developers will actively collude to keep rent high, it's that when rents begin to fall, the profit incentive shrinks, and if this becomes a persistent trend, developers will begin to exit the market until rents stabilize and then rise again. It doesn't mean overbuilding wo...

Re: GO CHIEFS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Also, just because someone was "has military experience" doesn't mean they know jack about guns. Most people are very uneducated on the subject. There are more guns than people in this country and yet even the gun advocates admit that "most people are very uneducated on [guns]."...

There had been some rumors in recent days, but I confess I did not truly expect the Royals to hand out a contract like that

Wait until they find out that was all part of Taylor's long game as she and Super Bowl MVP Brock Purdy co-endorse Nancy Pelosi for president at San Francisco's Super Bowl victory parade

Re: Downtown Baseball Stadium
My argument is very clear and has been for months... scratch that, years. A stadium in East Crossroads no doubt has immediate economic benefits. A stadium in East Village is better than Truman Sports Complex but will not deliver the same impact as one located in East Crossroads. The Crossroads neig...

Re: Downtown Baseball Stadium
I'm starting to find it shocking that a few of you on here, a development forum, are pushing for suburban type, decentralized development simply because you want a hole filled. Spreading out the development does a few things. 1. Lowers density which can result in lower population density and maybe ...

https://twitter.com/jonketz/status/1742697156660601008?s=42 lol, this tweet pairs pretty well with the dozens of pages in this thread arguing that the Crossroads site offers an opportunity to get rid of the Star building, which is otherwise impossible to repurpose and too expensive to demolish. I r...

Re: Is KC Tenants destroying the development future of downtown KCMO?
Explain to me how a development that doesn't directly displace anyone will cost KCT their homes. Why must the specific development "directly" displace someone for KCT to be concerned that it will ultimately cost them their homes? That seems like an exceptionally narrow way to look at the ...

Re: Is KC Tenants destroying the development future of downtown KCMO?
It's not going to cost them their homes. You know what will? Not building housing and letting our existing housing stock slowly rot. That will cost people their homes. Just look at the Eastside. And, social housing and the housing trust fund alone won't prevent that. There's not enough money there....

Re: Is KC Tenants destroying the development future of downtown KCMO?
The thing is that I don't care whether they're "anti-capitalist" or not. I've never argued the point. I've pretty explicitly not taken a position on it either way, because regardless, I think it's the wrong thing to highlight, for reasons I've already explained. But I think the actual docu...

Re: Is KC Tenants destroying the development future of downtown KCMO?
For what it's worth, I found the document I remembered seeing: https://kctenants.org/assets/uploads/kc-tenants-people-s-housing-platform-2-.pdf Looking through it again, it doesn't suggest any kind of hardline refusal to accept any proposal that includes private developers or landlords. On the contr...

Re: Is KC Tenants destroying the development future of downtown KCMO?
Well, rather than "gnash [my] teeth on an internet message board" the past two years, I've been out trying to build new housing in the city. Which probably means I've done more for tenants in the city than KCT has over the same time frame. But if we are at the point where you are just ins...

Re: Is KC Tenants destroying the development future of downtown KCMO?
I think that if KC or Jackson County proposed a program like Montgomery County's, you would probably see some (well-earned, in my opinion) distrust from KCT about what the program will actually do and who it will really benefit that would need to be overcome. And the Montgomery County program does h...

Re: Is KC Tenants destroying the development future of downtown KCMO?
"Landlord rights" aren't just as crucial as tenant rights. Just because there are two parties to an agreement, it doesn't mean that the interests of each party in the agreement are equal. Striking a balance is, as you say, essential, but a proper balance must account for the in fact starkl...

Re: Is KC Tenants destroying the development future of downtown KCMO?
If you think that helping landlords "protect their property rights and investments efficiently" is as important as -- or more important than -- keeping people in their homes and off of the streets, then no, you don't appreciate how serious eviction is. When someone gets run over by a car, ...

Re: Is KC Tenants destroying the development future of downtown KCMO?
I'm not sure in what world I could possibly be convinced that looser eviction rules are actually good for tenants, but it's not this one. There is zero reason to believe landlords wouldn't abuse an "easy and quick" eviction process, and it stands to reason that those tenants with "que...
