If the Plaza Riot deserves its' own thread, why wouldn't acts of violence and crime in Overland Park get one?

Do we only recognize violence and crime in KCMO, and ignore it in Johnson County suburbs?

Re: Convention hotel proposal for P&L building (and surrounding block)

The trouble with that argument is that the city does not spend that amount of money adding new infrastructure to those areas.  Much of what the city spends with regards to capital is for repairing or replacing what is already there, throughout the city, not just on the fringe.  And if those taxpaye...

Re: Convention hotel proposal for P&L building (and surrounding block)

Ok, fair question.  I would have the City stop spending money adding NEW infastructure like streets, sidewalks, street lights, sewers, and bridges in far-flung suburban cornfields where there is no infastructure and development yet.  And instead, spend that money rebuilding commercial activity downt...

I wonder if that building spec is for the site of the old nut and bolt company building that burned down?

Re: Convention hotel proposal for P&L building (and surrounding block)

The interesting thing to note about the Power and Light Building is that it was originally designed to have a identical second building added next to it so that it was a twin-towered structure.

So I wonder if the suburbanites are going to stop going to Oak Park Mall, or dumping their kids off there?

Re: Convention hotel proposal for P&L building (and surrounding block)

Before everyone gets their pants in a twist, we should wait and see what the funding mechanism is for this project. Ron Jury has already secured $52 million in federal and state historic tax credits on a $280 million project.  That alone funds about 18 percent of the total cost of building a new con...

Re: Convention hotel proposal for P&L building (and surrounding block)

The building of a new downtown convention hotel, and the money spent on it, accomplish more than the one goal of creating more hotel rooms and attracting conventions. The plan reuses a historic, iconic building that is mostly empty, and will probably continue to decline if nothing is done. There is ...

Re: Convention hotel proposal for P&L building (and surrounding block)

One of Hendrick's points was why the Loop is being favored over other neighborhood?  Well, I would counter that the Loop was a depressed neighborhood when all these public-financed projects began, and still is to some extent. A few years ago, the Loop was filled with vacant surface lots and vacant, ...

Re: Convention hotel proposal for P&L building (and surrounding block)

It's true. Kansas City was a big convention city because so many rail lines ran through here in all directions, and it was a convenient, central location for people coming by train for hours in every direction. But that wasn't the only advantage KC had. The other big factor was that from 1920-1933, ...

Re: "Taking Back Our Country" at Sprint Center

It isn't organized labor's problem that they tried to get the best deal for their workers that they could. Organized labor exists in German, Korean, and Japanese car companies, and they've put out a good product for years. German workers actually have better benefits than American auto workers. Germ...

Re: "Taking Back Our Country" at Sprint Center

People also forget that Korea, China, Japan, Germany, France, and the UK subsidize their auto industries in many ways.

Some of those countries provide health care for citizens, so the car companies don't have to do it, which has given them an unfair financial advantage over US auto companies.
