Re: Kemper Arena

They ought to do something in the summer similar to Frontier Days in Cheyenne Wyoming and have a big rodeo event, country music stars, and something akin to a Jackson County Fair with amusements and such. http://cfdrodeo.com/index.aspx Perhaps a few monkeys riding dogs would bring the people in.  :P...

Re: Law Building follow up

I always thought the circumstances surrounding the demolition of the Law Building were suspicious. Especially the speed with which it was done considering the building was on the National Register of Historic Places.  That whole business of the potential buyer insisting the building be demolished be...

Re: OFFICIAL: Power & Light District

I hope at least the Power & Light Condos gets built. It will as least help the City gauge if there is a  market for new, modern residential condos downtown. I agree that downtown needs a lot  more residents to support the grocery store, and even the existing CVS store. The downtown loop needs to...

It's a very positive sign.  I'm just glad something is happening because it would have been a shame to lose those buildings to demolition.

Re: OFFICIAL: Power & Light District

It doesn't seem to me that Cordish has a leg to stand on.  Unless they have a contract that states they have exclusive rights to festival permits, and that other areas cannot have them, it's a no-win situation and suing the City is not going to accomplish much. And yes, they should be more worried a...

Re: OFFICIAL: Power & Light District

Wayne Cauthen stated tonight on the KMBC Channel 9 News that Kansas City is not contractually bound to give Cordish exclusive rights for festival party permits.  Apparently, it was discussed, and even promised, but there is no contract holding the city to only allowing Cordish to do it.

Street Landscaping Starting on W. 10th

It appears that the street landscaping project has started on W. 10th at Broadway. The sidewalk around Seiden's Furs store is torn up, and piles of gravel have been  placed near there.  I think this phase of relandscaping will occur between Broadway and Wyandotte.

Re: Eyesores & Architectural Blunders (ongoing thread)

Parkchester, Stuyvesant Town, and Peter Cooper Village were built and owned for many years by Metropolitan Life Insurance Company as middle class affordable housing.  For most of their history, they were rent-controlled so they remained moderately-priced.  I don't know if they remain rent-controlled...

Re: Eyesores & Architectural Blunders (ongoing thread)

It's amazing how some large-scale housing projects like this fail and others don't.  There are others that haven't like Stuyvesant Town, Peter Cooper Village, and Parkchester in NYC.  Stuyvesant Town is one of the more desirable large housing projects in NYC.  It has a waiting list as does Cooper Vi...

The remaining townhouse was part of a row along 6th Street clear to the corner. I'm just showing the context in how that remaining townhouse was part of the block at one time.

KMBC Channel 9 New reported this evening that Temptations Totally Nude request to expand was up before the City Council today.  The request includes converting the club from a juice bar to one selling liquor. Word of approval, or not, will come later.

Fang, I have searched the library archives for years, and you repeatedly come up with material I have never seen before.  Thanks, so much. Loftguy, they are constantly adding new photos to the database, so things that never came up before often will if you keep visiting.  The Granite Building , for...

Re: Grand Slam C-Store

Yeah, I've gotten that response from them as well. They are not very pro-active and I think they have little funding to work with. However, they might be able to direct DNA in how to approach the situation. I would think the Landmarks Commission would also be able to direct you to building researche...

Re: Grand Slam C-Store

Staubio, I would contact the Historic Kansas City Foundation and get their advice about how to proceed getting the designation--since they do this sort of thing all the time.  They will probably advise DNA to hire a historic building survey researcher to gather information about the building. http:/...
