Bass Pro - DOWNTOWN?

In other words, I guess it seems like the loop is completly devoid of touristy stuff, where the River Market has the potential, with the Steamship Arabia, Town of Kansas, and any other proposed river front attractions. The river front is an area that needs to be used, and with the walking trails lin...

Bass Pro - DOWNTOWN?

This seems like something we need to see to decide on. I have serious problems imagining Bass Pro fitting in downtown because a big part of the art of architecture is not just about the building but how it fits with the area around it. I would hate for something like Bass Pro to come in and mess up ...

That's my thinking too, though I don't know if we could get that much changed without major recontruction- like adding secure areas in spokes jutting out the back of the terminals. It's one thing to get there early and wait to go through the secure area, its another to exspect to have any chance to ...

Is the Kansas board dead?

There is too much name-calling and steriotyping both ways. As a Johnson Countian by birth, I have shard some of those thoughts, but having spent a good amount of time up north, it is a very nice place to live. Johnson County is a lot bigger and more busy, which I like, but Northlanders are like fami...

Ideas on developing downtown from the AZ Republic

It looks like Phoenix is trying to do the same things we are, only they have much less to start with (but much more land to work with!) This includes links to articles about what a few other cities have done successfully.

No, I'm not sure about that link. Try builtstlouis.net. I had more to say, but I forgot it after reading Cyburbia's books. :( I'll get back to it later.

Re: I-35

True. On the way to S.t. Louis I always like to see the development in eastern Jack, and I-70 is where all the development is in St. Louis. Coming back for Christmas, I was surprised at how close Topeka and Lawrence were getting to each other. A little more of that and I-70 will make us look like a ...

And, I would agree wtiih Northlander again that St. Louis has leaders who get things done. They got the rail done, although it took some doing, they got the TWA dome done, they got the Savis Center done, and they are probably going to get the new stadium and the neighborhood around it, even though t...

Nice points, good2great. Another thing to remember is that Lenexa is going to do what is right for Lenexa, and part of that is investment in the Kansas City area, but part of that is also development of Lenexa. If you are in City Hall over there, then your thinking will be that suburban sprawl choul...

Indian Springs

Did anyone see the article in the Star about Indian Springs Mall the other day? It looks like the recent increase in hispanic immigration is really starting to pay off for KCK. I know that some Mexican American woned businesses have been opening in Johnson County as well, but from the sounds ofit, I...

Thats a very good point about the urban core. If downtown were everything between the riverand the Plaza, it would be about five miles long! I went back down to the Plaza over break, and after six months in the desert, I was amazed at how urban the area is- how many highrises have sprung up around t...

Does anyone know what is going on sith the Riverwalk development in Wichita? It looked for a while like they had a pretty cool riverwalk with residential, commercial and retail mix on the Arkansas downtown, bvut that it was competing with a suburban development for tenants. It seems like they are tr...

KCOKEK, Phoenix really doesn't compare with Kansas City. Except for the mountains, it is flat as a pancake and brown. (The mountains are pretty cool, though). The weather is good now, there is hardly ever any rain, but when it rains, it storms. The summer is hot, but it doesn't fele much worse than ...

I agree that a lot of people are like that, but I don't think that's a Johnson County phenomenon. I lived in the Northland recently and a lot of the people who live up there never cross the river and could care less that there is anything on the other side. They are more aware of the Missouri suburb...

KCK impressions

These are some good observations. I was just up there today too, looking at the downtown area. There is a lot of nice new housing directly north of downtown, some of it multi family, but there is also a nice suburban neighborhood there too, toward the east. That arial photograph that is a few thread...

The African American population is not a majority, but its large, probably about 1/3 of the county. Quindaro is mostly African American, but when I was subbing, Central, Argentine, and Rosedale Middle Schools all had surprisingly large White minorities. Then I don't know how many people are there, b...

What part of the city is that? You are right, KCK does have its rural side to it, but I think that most of the eastern parts of the city are more dense than that, from what I've seen. I'm from Shawnee, but I used to substitute teach in KCK district, so I got to see a lot of the city. I would really ...
